Penny Hardaway doesn’t believe Kawhi Leonard is a superstar

Degree Shooting Stars Competition 2015

Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway was one of the more exciting NBA players during his time in the league, and he knows a thing or two about success. He and Shaq were once one of the most effective duos the league has ever seen, and the Magic came close to winning a title — something the franchise may never accomplish — during that time.

But what he said during a radio appearance on Monday was downright ridiculous.

Hardaway appeared on Sirius XM NBA’s “Bottomline,” and claimed Kawhi Leonard isn’t a superstar. CBS Sports transcribed the interview and provided the full quotes.

“Superstar? No. Kawhi Leonard is not a superstar because he has no interest in being the face of the league or starring in TV commercials. He’s a good player, but I wouldn’t consider him a superstar player.”

That logic is ridiculous. So apparently, a player can’t be a superstar if they choose not to market themself at the level that someone like LeBron James or Stephen Curry does.

Hardaway was a four-time All-Star, and a great player, but he was never a superstar. “Lil Penny” was more of a star than he was, so he’s really in no position to judge Leonard.

Leonard is the best two-way player in the NBA right now. In my eyes, that’s enough to declare him a superstar.
