The Boston Bruins opened up the 2015 regular season last night at home against the Winnipeg Jets. The Bruins lost 6-2 and looked flat the whole game. The intensity throughout the game was sub par and only at times could you feel a strong atmosphere. The Jets played well no questions, but the Bruins lack of defense cost them the game. Rask held his own despite the six goals allowed, he was responsible for an arguable two, which I will get to later. Scoring for the Bruins was David Krejci and David Pastrnak who at the time both of those goals were crucial as Krejci fired the opening salvo and Pastrnak turned it into a one goal deficit in the fourth period.

I sat in front of the TV during introductions and I realized the most important part of the season was right there in front of me, in what I was hearing. As PA announcer, Jim Martin, went down the list of the new 2015 Boston Bruins roster I realized that these Bruins are not the Bruins we are used to seeing. The majority of the players are first three year players with the Bruins and hearing the names made me see how bad this season could go. We have no primer players that are established goal scorers, and no physical presence. Our biggest hitter is a smaller player in Brad Marchand who can lay big hits however his body is not imposing. We are missing anything that could be considered an x factor. To top it all off they showed our Captain Chara standing in a suit and tie on the bench out with an injury.

At the begenning of the broadcast, they showed Claude Julian as begin the longest tendered coach in the NHL and then Andy Brickly proceed to talk about Don Sweeny’s first year and how the Bruins are entering a new era. The Bruins started off the season well, as they went up a man on the power play early, they were fore checking well, and controlled the puck with good scoring opportunities. Until the play lead to a David Krejci goal.

As intermission came and we shifted to the second period the Jets came out with determination and a common goal, as the Bruins came out with no energy and got beat up in the second period, allowing three consecutive goals. At the begenning of the third, Pastrnak scored to make it 3-2, a one goal game and very winnable for the Bruins. However the Bruins defense struggled and the Jets fore check dominated causing turnovers all night long, leading to two goals that could be considered own goals by Torey Krug and David Krejci that Tuukka had no chance on. Then late in the third when it was not even a game the Bruins pulled their goalie leaving an open net and the Jets scored for a final score of 6-2.

In the end the Bruins lack of defense and not begin able to get around the Jets pressure. The Bruins also lacked intensity. Tuukka Rask played well however he did not receive help from the defensive side. The offense got a good amount of scoring chances however they only finished twice. The Bruins need to do a better job moving forward controlling the puck and maintaining pressure blue line to blue as they look forward to a powerful Montreal Canadians team Saturday night.
