The 2015-16 season ended on a low note with expectations of the C’s making a deeper run this year. While the C’s fell short this postseason, the real W will be determined this offseason. If the right decisions are made the Celtics could be a title contender in the 2016-2017 season. It will all start with the 2016 NBA Draft. The Celtics will likely have a high lottery pick courtesy of the Nets and the right pick could make all the difference for the C’s as they try to make the jump as title contenders.
The question for the Celtics is do they go for need or best available. If Ainge goes by need he would take a big man. But picks this high are few and far between, especially for a team like the Celtics. This will likely be the Celtics highest pick in the draft since 1997 when they took Chauncey Billups with the #3 pick, so picking the “next superstar” should be Ainge’s top focus. Not only would this help in the years to come, but it could help attract big name free agents this summer like Kevin Durant who could see that the Celtics are focused on winning right now. Ben Simmons and Brandon Ingram have extremely high upside and would be tough to pass on if they fall to the Celtics. The problem with “the next superstar” is that they are usually very raw and sometimes need a few years before they show their true capabilities. However, the Celtics are in a prime situation where they can trade their valuable player for a piece that can help them immediately if they feel their rookie isn’t panning out.
It’s hard to believe that the Celtics have a legitimate chance of winning the chip next year, but they definitely do. With the already experienced, yet youthful team assembled by Danny Ainge, and coached by up and comer Brad Stevens, the Celtics are already in position to be better than this past season. Combine this with a big name free agent and a potential superstar and the Celtics would be title contenders for years to come.
