Before last night’s NBA games, the Celtics had only a half game lead over the Washington Wizards. After a Celtic win and a Wizards loss, the tables have turned. The Celtics defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves yesterday at home by a score of 117-104.
With the C’s rocking their St. Patrick’s Day uniforms, they struggled to keep Minnesota from scoring in the first half. Boston is traditionally a slow starter, but the Wolves seemed to be scoring in bunches. In the first half, 2nd year man Karl-Anthony Towns hit on his first six shots no matter what defense was on him. The Celtics were getting out-rebounded and doing just enough to keep the game close. The second half, particularly the 3rd quarter, was where Boston turned it up.
Al Horford was without a doubt the player of the game. He shot an unreal 75% from the field and finished with 20 points. Not only was he the second leading scorer for Boston, but he led the team in rebounds and assists. He finished one rebound and two assists away from a triple double. The C’s made their statement in the third quarter by outscoring the Timberwolves 27-17.
In the Eastern Conference, the Celtics are now two games behind the Cavaliers and sit in second place. With just over a month left in the season, they will look to hold off the Wizards. Washington is just 1.5 games behind Boston. The two teams play each other in Boston next Monday, March 20th.
