The Oakland Athletics for the past few days rumors have swirled regarding starting pitcher Jake Peavy of the Chicago White Sox, yet the cost was too high for the franchise. Looking elsewhere General Manager Billy Beane made another brilliant move with division rival the Los Angeles Angels.
Heading to the Athletics is Alberto Callaspo who started his career as a second basemen with the Kansas City Royals before moving to third base. His best season came in 2009 when he hit .300, had a obp of .356, with 173 hits, 41 doubles, eight triples and 73 rbi. This season he’s hit .253 with 74 hits, 13 doubles, 5 home runs and 36 rbi.
Also, at the O.Co Coliseum he has had 105 at-bats, has hit .276, with 2 doubles, 2 triples and 13 rbi. The A’s can use him against left-handed starters and while playing second base and can give third basemen Josh Donaldson a day off.
Grant Green a top prospect in the A’s organization who struggled defensively is going to the Angels. This season he made his MLB debut with 15 at-bats and has yet to record a hit, has struck out 6 times and driven in a run. Has spent most of the season in Sacramento where he’s hit .325, with 123 hits, 27 doubles, 3 triples, 11 home runs, 50 rbi and an obp of .379.
If the Angels do trade Howie Kendrick, Green could easily get his shot to showcase his bat and at best defensively he’s below average.
