The New York Knicks have been working hard to sign another player during the 2013 NBA Free Agency period, and it seems a veteran role player will get signed. Someone like Kenyon Martin, Raja Bell, Baron Davis, or Aaron Brooks are the likely candidates for the Knicks.

One player who the organization attempted to bring in is power forward Elton Brand and were unable to get him to sign for a minimum contract. Their best option is to re-sign Martin, who was a solid contributor to the Knicks last season. With only have $1.7 million dollars left in their budget offering a minimum contract is how the Knicks will have to go.

Martin got signed late during the 2012 season, as the 35-year-old started in 11 of his 18 games averaging 23.9 minutes per game while contributing 7.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks per game.

With a big body needed to play excellent defense in the low block after Marcus Camby got traded, Martin fits that role perfectly. He’s also a solid rebounder and provides toughness.  The only downside to Martin, is his offensive game. The 6’9’’ big man has a weak jumper and is mostly known for his put back dunks. He also doesn’t have a real post game, which is usually expected from a big man.

Overall, Martin will be an exceptional role player for the Knicks if re-signed, backing up the recently acquired Andrea Bargnani and Amar’e Stoudemire. This signing will be most ideal for the Knicks, as they have positive experience with the big man.
