Just when it appeared that the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens were on their deathbed, a wise old wizard helps in bring them back to life.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Ravens have agreed to a five-year $35 millon deal with free-agent defensive end/linebacker Elvis Dumervil, formerly of the Denver Broncos, with $8.5 million in the first year.
In what is perhaps his shrewdest free-agent move yet, Baltimore GM Ozzie Newsome, who would see players such as Ed Reed, Paul Kruger, Dannelle Ellerbe, Bernard Pollard leave in free agency, Ray Lewis and Matt Birk retire and Anquan Boldin traded, has managed to successfully offset those losses in landing the former Louisville standout.
Baltimore, who would also sign Marcus Spears and Chris Canty, now have a dangerous bookend opposite Terrell Suggs on defense.
In landing the 29-year old Dumervil, Baltimore is not only able to retool it’s vaunted 3-4 defense , but also silence the critics who prematurely predicted their demise.
