Ever since the Miami Dolphins disappointing week 17 loss to the New York Jets ended the 2013 season, fans immediately began to look forward to the 2014 NFL draft. What will they do with the 19th overall pick? Now that free agency has offered a few solutions to the roster, the Miami Dolphins can focus on filling up their remaining holes through the draft. Below I will offer my rendition of the 2014 NFL draft, however I am not Dennis Hickey and this is only my opinion.
Round 1 Pick #19: C.J. Mosley, LB, Alabama
Although glaring holes on the right side of Miami’s offensive line remain evident, the selection of C.J. Mosley is taking the best player available approach. With all the top tackles likely gone by the time Miami’s selection rolls along, Mosley offers Miami the best option. This selection allows the Dolphins to shift current inside linebacker Dannell Ellerbe to his more natural right outside linebacker position while plugging Mosley inside, keeping run stuffing Koa Misi on the left and sending liability Phillip Wheeler to the bench. The difference between a tackle who allows 7 sacks vs a tackle who allows 10 sacks is not as great as some may think, Mosley is the pick here.
Round 2 Pick #50 Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia
Rejoice! The Miami Dolphins finally solved their issues at the tackle positions by signing Brandon Albert via free agency and now selecting Moses. It is as clear as daylight that the fins need to upgrade their O-line and Morgan Moses will definitely do just that. If the season started today, former Detroit Lion Jason Fox is the penciled in starter at right tackle.
Round 3 Pick #81 Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington
Although Charles Clay was impressive at the TE position for the Dolphins in 2013, he lacks the size and speed to be a vertical seem threat Tight End. At 6’5, 265 pounds, Seferian-Jenkins is a physical specimen. With Michael Egnew on the roster bubble and Dion Sims barely being on the field last year, Clay and ASJ would offer an incredible 1-2 punch for the Dolphins at the Tight End position.
Round 4 Pick #116 Ahmad Dixon, S, Baylor
Reshad Jones is coming off his worst season and the Miami Dolphins lost starter Chris Clemons through free agency. Replacement Louis Delmas has shown he can be a reliable starter, however the dolphins have little depth at the position. Jimmy Wilson remains a S/CB insurance plan, but he is not starter material. The Selection of Dixon would provide depth at safety for the Miami Dolphins while potentially being the future Starer.
Round 5 Pick #155 Anthony Steen, G, Alabama
Boom, the entire mess of offensive line that Jeff Ireland left behind has been fixed. 2013 Starter at right guard John Jerry departed via Free Agency and 2013 third rounder Dallas Thomas could not crack the lineup for the embarrassing 2013 offensive line. Steen would come in and play his natural college position of right guard, moving Dallas Thomas to the bench.
Round 6 Pick #190 Storm Johnson, RB, Central Florida
Gone are the days when running backs are selected in the top 5 picks of a draft. The new Fad is finding Running Backs late. The selection of Johnson would provide depth behind one year band-aid solution Knowshon Moreno and Lamar Miller. Daniel Thomas is as good as gone and Mike Gillislee did not show much promise during the 2013 season.
Round 7 Pick #234 Ryan Grant, WR, Tulane – Grant would compete for the 4/5 WR spot and play ST
