Another week in college football was in the bag, and it was full of intriguing story lines. We’re seeing more of the same from the prospects, but some are really showing a bit more ability in some contested games. The next few weeks should answer more questions we have on these potential 2015 QBs.
– Kevin Hogan, QB, Stanford 6-4 , 228lbs (redshirt junior)
17/26 178 1TD 1 INT & 1 RUSH TD vs Washington
Next Opp: @ Notre Dame
Stanford had their hands full with a very solid Washington team. Both teams were undefeated and Washington showed why they were undefeated. Stanford struggled to move the ball and this will be a game the scouts look at closely when looking at Hogan’s body of work. For his part, Hogan kept drives alive with his legs in this game too, rushing for 53 yards and a TD. Hogan was able to drive the team down the field and scored the game winning TD to win the game. This coming Saturday Stanford will be challenged immensely as they travel to South Bend to battle Notre Dame. This game has quietly become a pretty good rivalry type game, and the games have been pretty competitive in recent years. I’ll be looking at how Hogan handles the Notre Dame defense which has be re-invigorated under their new Defensive Coordinator Brian VanGorder.
– Connor Cook, QB, Michigan State 6-4, 210lbs (redshirt junior)
8/12 126 2 TD 0 INT & 1 RUSH TD vs Wyoming
Next Opp: Nebraska
Same as the last game, after Cook scored a couple of TDs in the air and ground the day was done for Cook. He had another easy outing against Wyoming. The game this Saturday should provided a better challenge for Cook as they host Nebraska.
– Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State 6-4, 235lbs (redshirt sophomore)
26/38 365 4 TD 2 INT vs NC State
Next Opp: Wake Forest
Winston had an up and down game against fellow ACC undefeated team in NC State, but some are starting to question how good FSU is this year, and whether or not Winston is going to be good at the next level. Close games and off the field issues will be looked at closer by NFL scouts as the year progresses. FSU plays Wake Forest next, so it should be an easy win, but the real test will be @ Syracuse and when they host a very talented Notre Dame team in two weeks. We’re about to find out what Winston can do in some contested games with better talented teams.
– Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon 6-5, 218lbs (redshirt junior)
BYE WEEK
Next Opp: Arizona 20/32 276 2 TD 0 INT & 1 FUMBLE
Oregon played last night (Thurs) and they were upset again by Arizona. Arizona stunned the Ducks at home, and their College Playoff hopes took a huge hit as a result. Mariota had a solid game from a stats view, but he had a hard time moving the team against Arizona. The Ducks only had 7 points at the half, and struggled the rest of the game. These are the type of games talent evaluators will go over with a fine comb. We’ve seen Oregon struggle against certain teams and Arizona has their number. The pressure will be on Oregon and Mariota as they travel to UCLA next week. For more on the Arizona loss and Mariota check out this nice read.
– Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA 6-3, 223lbs (redshirt junior)
18/23 355 4 TD 0 INT & 1 RUSH TD vs Arizona State
Next Opp: Utah
This was the game I wanted to watch and it delivered. Well, Hundley looked really good in this game and against a pretty solid ASU defense. Hundley was surgical and looked very impressive, it was a signature game for me. This game probably improved Hundley’s draft stock and should have him right there with Mariota for the top QBs that could potentially be in the 2015 draft. He played through his sore non-throwing elbow and continued to make plays, he showed some true moxie in this game. If I had to rank the QBs I have Hundley at 1a or 1b. Hundley has taken care of the ball this year and he has progressed from last year, that’s something you want to see from a QB that could enter the draft in 2015. After this week’s game against Utah, UCLA will host Oregon in what should be a great game. I can’t wait to see Hundley and Mariota square off. The winner could further cement themselves as the top QB in the nation.
– Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor 6-3, 230lbs (redshirt senior)
30/44 336 1 TD 1 INT & 2 RUSH TD vs Iowa State
Next Opp: @ Texas
Petty continues to air it out and had another solid game; albeit, against sub standard competition. We’re going to get a better feel for Petty and Baylor has some tough opponents on the horizon. Texas will be a good in-state rivalry, and then they have some ranked teams they’ll need to fend off. It’ll be interesting to see how this Baylor offense handles higher powered defenses. If Petty struggles against Oklahoma, Oklahoma State or Kansas State then it’ll be pretty telling. Like most, everyone is wondering if Petty is a system QB. Is Petty going to be another RGIII or another David Klinger or will he be a legitimate pro QB? Petty will be able to answer the critics in the next few games.
