Herbert’s 3 1st-half touchdowns give him 11 in his true freshman season, breaking an Oregon record by Mike Jorgenson for the most in a true freshman year.
This was the first time all season Oregon had scored on their opening drive.
A holding penalty backed the Ducks up inside the 10, then the Sun Devils dumped Royce Freeman for another loss.
Herbert, nearly sacked, lost the football in the end zone but had it bounce directly back to him. He threw under pressure incomplete down the left sideline. A run on 3rd and 22 was stopped well short, and Wheeler punted out of the end zone, 44 yards.
ASU would start inside the 50 with a chance to get back in the game.
The play would have been called back by a penalty anyway, but Darren Carrington took a bad route to the ball on a long pass from Herbert. He left his feet when he should have kept running and made the pass look overthrown. Carrington has looked distracted over the last few weeks, largely ineffective. The Ducks don’t call his number often. The junior had aspirations to leave early for the NFL but his season has been a disappointment.
The Ducks threw Ballage for a loss on first down, then checked his run on second down. His third down pass skipped to the receiver and the Sun Devils punted for the fifth time in the game. This was a good stop by the defense, albeit against the conference’s most suspect and injury-riddled offense. Still, it looks like progress.
Another drive by the Oregon offense would put this one to bed.
