49ers say Colin Kaepernick will start vs. Jets

San Francisco 49ers v Chicago Bears

Despite a historically inept passing performance against the Chicago Bears, Colin Kaepernick will start at quarterback when the San Fransisco 49ers play the New York Jets on Sunday.

Offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins announced the decision on Tuesday:

Kaepernick was benched in the second half of San Francisco’s loss to the Bears at snowy Soldier Field. He left the game after taking five sacks and completing just 1-of-5 passes for four yards, becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to take at least five sacks and throw for fewer than five yards in a single game.

Backup Blaine Gabbert completed four passes for 35 yards and took a sack resulting in a safety.

The 49ers will stick with Kaepernick for at least another week. The Jets are coming off a similarly disastrous performance on Monday night against Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts, so it’s reasonable to think Kaepernick will bounce back in Week 14.

Over seven starts in 2016, Kaepernick has thrown for 1,444 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions. He has a 85.5 passer rating and 393 rushing yards.
