With the start of training camp underway, all eyes are on new Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase. New offensive and defensive schemes and weapons are on display for the first time since the quarterback whisperer assumed power. One can argue that this team has been specifically designed to help up-and-down quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who despite some good moments and numbers, has struggled to keep the faith of previous coaches. Now there is no question. This is Tannehill’s team. The question is can he deliver? Time will tell, but training camp could be a good measure of what’s in store for this season. Here are 5 things to watch for in training camp.
Wide Receiver talent and chemistry with Tannehill
Mike Wallace is gone. Brian Harline is gone. Brandon Gibson and Rishard Matthews are gone. Tannehill’s new receiving core is a dynamic, talented group. DeVonte Parker, Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills, and Leronte Carroo are all promising receivers with unique skill sets. We already know Tannehill and Landry have good chemistry, and Parker’s development late last season was certainly promising. Can these receivers along with Tannehill take the next step and put points on the board?
Running back position
Newly signed runningback Arian Foster provides some depth, as well as a veteran presence. How much of an impact will he have? Expect Jay Ajayai to start, with Foster contributing in pass catching and blocking situations. Damien Williams and maligned ex-current-Dolphin Daniel Thomas will battle for the third spot.
Schemes on both sides of the ball
New coaches and coordinator mean new schemes. Head coach Adam Gase and defensive coordinator Vance Joseph are both first timers. Offensive Coordinator Clyde Christensen has spent most of his career as a quaterbacks coach. Thus, we don’t have a solid idea of how the offense and defense will look. Expect the offense to be as much Gase’s baby as Christensen. And expect the defense to rely on the trenches as the secondary is a bit thin.
Cornerback position
With second-round pick Xavian Howard and Bobby McCain starting training camp on the PUP list, the already thin cornerback position just got even thinner. While there will be some competition between Tony Lippett and Walt Aikens, don’t be surprised if the Dolphins add another CB to the roster.
Cameron Wake’s Progress
Coming off of a season ending Achilles tear, Cameron Wake’s progress will be watched carefully. It will be interesting to see how much he plays and how quickly and to what form he recovers.
