Not all moves are going to make waves, especially when they’re for a guy who has spent the majority of his career on the practice squad but the Rams needed a back up quarterback and they found a back up quarterback. Former Georgia stand out Aaron Murray is reuniting with his star back Todd Gurley and will likely be the second string QB for Jared Goff.
In a way, this is a non story with the only upside is the Rams are three deep at quarterback with Goff, Sean Mannion, and now Murray so that’s one less thing to think about in the draft but the only possible way this turns into a slightly bigger deal is if Murray is able to maybe push Goff towards competency.
Is that grasping at straws? Yeah. Murray is on his 4th team and in his previous stops with the Chiefs, Cardinals, and Eagles he’s only really cracked the practice squad so he won’t all of a sudden won’t turn into 2006 Tony Romo.
Aaron Murray at the very least serves a need at a dirt cheap price. There was no way they were bringing back Case Keenum who last time anyone checked was following Jeff Fisher around looking for a team.
Worst case scenario, Murray doesn’t prove his worth and they either demote him to the practice squad, scoop up a vet during the summer and everyone goes back to mistaking Murray for his brother who competed on The Bachelorette.
Best case scenario he finally finds a team he can fit with and he’s able to at least crack the depth chart and not be an embarrassing option if Goff gets hurt or stink up the joint. At the very least, he and Todd Gurley can reminisce about their Georgia Bulldog days when the offense is off the field.
