After the Anaheim Ducks gave captain Ryan Getzlef an eight-year, $66 million extension, it seemed the writing was on the wall that Corey Perry would not be back. Well surprise, surprise tonight after the first period of the Ducks-San Jose Sharks game the Ducks announced that Perry would be returning.
Many experts figured the Ducks could sign either Perry or Getzlef, but not both. Perry showed his commitment to the Anaheim organization signing for the less than he could have got on the open market. Many expected the Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers, and Detroit Red Wings to make a strong run at signing Perry.
Perry and Getzlef came into the league together and have been linemates since. The Ducks now have both inked through 2021 to the tune of $135 million. Anaheim fans can rest easy now, knowing their two key pieces up front will be in a Ducks sweater for many seasons to come.
Both deals might mean the end for Bobby Ryan in Southern California. Ryan hasn’t seemed very happy since trade rumors started last season. The Ducks however might be able to keep him with Saku Koivu coming off the books and Teemu Selanne likely retiring.
Anaheim, who only trails the Chicago Blackhawks in terms of points, will now focus on a Stanley Cup run. They have their two biggest offense stars locked up long-term and this removes any distractions that could have arose due to lengthy contract negotiations.
