Nevada-Boise State notebook: Gavins, Broyles seriously injured
Senior cornerback Jerrell Gavins likely will miss the rest of the season and sophomore right guard Jake Broyles will miss the rest of the season, coach Chris Petersen said.
Gavins, who leads the team with three interceptions, sustained a knee injury during practice last week. It’s not a torn anterior cruciate ligament, Petersen said.
Gavins can redshirt and return next year because he hasn’t redshirted in the past and has only played three games. If he had played one more game, he wouldn’t be eligible to redshirt.
“It’s a pretty extensive injury,” Petersen said. “(Redshirting) is what the plan looks like.”
Sophomore Quaylon Ewing-Burton replaced Gavins in the starting lineup Saturday. Sophomore Ebo Makinde, who was banged up and didn’t play, will compete for that job.
Broyles, meanwhile, has a toe injury. He was replaced by senior Chuck Hayes. Broyles was injured in the Tulsa game.
Other injury notes:
– Senior center Thomas Byrd remains week to week. Sophomore backup Matt Paradis didn’t play Saturday but is making progress from his injury, Petersen said. Senior Cory Yriarte started for the first time since 2008. Yriarte didn’t play the past two seasons because of back-to-back torn ACLs.
“It really shows how hard-working the guy is, how dedicated he is,” quarterback Kellen Moore said. “He’s a positive guy. He was able to get through all those tough times he went through and now he’s getting the opportunity to play.”
– Wide receiver and punt returner Chris Potter missed the game, but he isn’t expected to be out long.
– Fullback Dan Paul (groin) still hasn’t played this season. He does have a redshirt year available and Petersen isn’t ruling that out.
– Defensive linemen Chase Baker and Tyler Horn returned to action after missing the Tulsa game

No. 4 Boise State’s defense suffocates Nevada
With Kellen Moore struggling to find his usual pinpoint accuracy, No. 4 Boise State turned to plan B: A heavy dose of Doug Martin and a suffocating defense.
Martin rushed for a season-best 126 yards and two scores, and his mates on the other side of the ball kept a potent Nevada offense from crossing midfield until the second half of the Broncos’ 30-10 victory Saturday.
For the Broncos (4-0), it was a bit of redemption against a Wolf Pack team that last year spoiled Boise State’s bid for a second straight perfect season.
October brings some clarity to national title race
Wisconsin and Alabama turned their conference showdowns into mismatches.
Behind Russell Wilson, the seventh-ranked Badgers erased an early deficit and pounded eighth-ranked Nebraska 48-17 in the Cornhuskers’ first Big Ten game Saturday night.
Trent Richardson was the star for No. 3 Alabama, which knocked Florida quarterback John Brantley out of the game late in the first half and routed the 12th-ranked Gators 38-10.
On the first Saturday of October, the national championship race got some clarity with the teams at the top of the rankings asserting their dominance.
Wilson accounted for three touchdowns and has emerged as a Heisman Trophy contender. Same goes for Richardson, who set a career best with 181 yards rushing.
The Badgers, the defending Big Ten champions, could see Nebraska again at the conference title game.
The Crimson Tide and Gators could also be paired up down the road in a league championship game.
But the gap between the Badgers and Tide and the Huskers and Gators was huge Saturday.
No. 1 LSU 35, Kentucky 7 — In Baton Rouge, La., Jordan Jefferson scored on his first play back from suspension and cornerback Tyrann Mathieu scored after setting an LSU record for career forced fumbles.
No. 2 Oklahoma 62, Ball State 6 — In Norman, Okla., Landry Jones threw for 425 yards and five touchdowns, Tony Jefferson fueled a second-quarter scoring surge with three interceptions and Oklahoma geared up for Texas.
No. 3 Alabama 38, No. 12 Florida 10 — In Gainesville, Fla, Trent Richardson ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns, breaking tackles and carrying defenders along the way, and Alabama rolled in an early season matchup of Southeastern Conference heavyweights.
Richardson finished with his fourth consecutive 100-yard game, and the latest one should solidify his position as one the Heisman Trophy front-runners.
No. 4 Boise State 30, Nevada 10 — In Boise, Idaho, Doug Martin ran for two touchdowns and Boise State’s suffocating defense shut down Nevada’s potent offense.
Boise State’s defense dominated throughout the game and prevented the Wolf Pack (1-3) from crossing midfield until midway through the third quarter.
Martin rushed for 126 yards on 21 carries, and his 43-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter put the Broncos (4-0) up 27-0. His best game of the season helped offset a lackluster performance by Kellen Moore and the rest of the Boise State offense.
Moore threw two touchdowns, but was also intercepted on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter. Moore’s second touchdown pass gave him 113 in his career, moving past Colt McCoy of Texas for eighth best all-time.
