Hout: The ‘heart and soul’

Former Lake City High star closing out stellar career on Boise State defense

“Coach Pete has turned me into a better person, teaching me not only skills that I’m using on the football field, but more about life off the football field. He probably coaches more about that than actual football,” Hout said in a phone interview from Boise. “I’m really glad that I came down here, and got the opportunity to learn some things from him. He’s definitely changed my life.”

Like how?

“He’s always preaching about integrity and responsibility, and being an ambassador — things you’re going to carry with you the rest of your life,” Hout said.

Hout’s football experience in Boise has been pretty good as well.

This season, his second as a starting inside linebacker, the 6-foot, 239-pound Hout leads the Broncos with 65 tackles, including an 18-tackle performance against Air Force which earned him Mountain West Conference defensive player of the week honors. read more here.

This young man is something special an Obvious product of Idaho a genital giant who can play ball!

College football predictions: First week of bowls

Las Vegas MACCO Bowl: Arizona State vs. Boise State. Broncos 70-28. Time was, Arizona State was the mid-major spoiler. The power of the old WAC, hometown boosters devised a bowl game to give their team a place to go (Fiesta), knocked off a favored powerhouse from the Big Eight/12 (Nebraska 1975). Now the Sun Devils are just a tired old established program that has no energy.

I don’t think ASU scores in this one sorry he’s off a little.

Physical play defines Martin

Around The Blue Turf 12/20/2011

Powerful style has led the way to back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons for senior RB

Doug Martin’s mom wouldn’t let him play football until his freshman year of high school.

Her reason? She didn’t want him getting hurt.

Eight years later, as one of the top rushers in Boise State history, he’s the one dishing out the pain.

“It’s kind of ironic, isn’t it?” Martin said

The 5-foot-9, 208-pound Martin packs a lot of power in his frame, yet can also break away from the pack with speed he calls “deceptive.” He’s the type of runner coaches hope for, as he can be relied upon to be a workhorse — his 36 carries Nov. 19 against San Diego State were the second-most in school history — and also a game-changer, evidenced by his career average of 5.6 yards per carry.

“He’s a thick guy that’s explosive and powerful,” Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. “… he has no fear whatsoever.

“If he can get enough speed, he’s going to hit it as hard as he can possibly hit that crease, and someone’s going to pay the price.” read more here.

I want you all to know I have already begun my lobbying to get the Lions to Draft him..  As well as Iloka. Potter.  Billy Winn Tyrone Crawford and Shea Mc Clellin.. . “I felt more comfortable with Boise — the Boise coaches and their players,” Lawrence said. “And they had a major that I want to major in (kinesiology). Plus, they’re a winning program. I love to be a part of a winning program.” Lawrence earned second-team All-America honors this year with 66 tackles, 27 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. He redshirted during his first year at Butler. Lawrence could have returned for another season at junior college but was ready to move on. He is originally from Aiken, S.C., and needed to attend a junior college for academic reasons. He visited Boise for the Wyoming game and committed Sunday. “I was able to (leave) and I didn’t want to waste my year,” he said

Boise State football coaches expect Broncos to handle Las Vegas well: ‘They’ve done nothing but always prepare and be ready’

The Broncos haven’t practiced much the past two weeks because the coaches were on the road recruiting, the players were taking finals and it’s a time for the team to take a break from the season’s grind. They held a walk-through on Wednesday and practiced Thursday and Friday before digging into the game plan Sunday. They’re hoping for a cleaner performance than last year. “I thought we played good, not great,” Petersen said of the Utah game. “I thought we played really well on defense but on offense, it’s that same old thing — offenses just lose a little bit of timing and rhythm. We’re going in to score and the ball comes out (Austin Pettis fumble) and we lose a touchdown there. Another one, Titus (Young) in the end zone, it’s very questionable whether he caught it or not. There were probably 21 points we had chances to make and we just didn’t.” Offense coordinator Brent Pease said Petersen has been “magical” at studying practice and determining when he needs to give the players a break and when he needs to crank up the intensity. “We’ve got a lot of seniors that have been through this,” Pease said. “Through four years of their careers, they’ve done nothing but always prepare and be ready. … I’m sure that’s what they’ll continue to do.”

Big East Boasts Boise in Times Square

Around The Blue Turf 12/20/2011

Visitors to New York City’s Times Square got a big taste of Boise, ID, on Tuesday when the Big East splashed its newest member to the conference all over the world-famous tourist attraction, including a sign that read, “Welcome to the Big East!”

The Broncos are joining the Big East in football starting in 2013 and Big East commissioner John Marinatto is pulling out all the stops to let the world know how excited he is to have them. After all, Marinatto is hoping the addition of Boise will result in the conference keeping its BCS automatic qualifier status (if there even is such a thing in the future).

That was as cool as it gets , what a class move by the Big East.

Joining The Big East: At Boise State, They Sing The Blues

Around The Blue Turf 12/20/2011

Gene Bleymaier was the athletic director at Boise State when the school’s football stadium was due for a new artificial surface in 1986.

As the story goes, Bleymaier was looking for a way to distinguish Bronco Stadium from every other college football facility in the nation. He figured that for $600,000, Boise Stadium should do something different with its turf.

And so the blue turf was born.

Bleymaier convinced school administrators that a bright, blue turf would set Boise State apart and become the football program’s national calling card. He got the OK and chose just the right shade of blue from the AstroTurf company that installed the surface.

The Broncos debuted with a 74-0 victory over Humboldt State and a local columnist dismissed “Lake Bleymaier” as “nothing more than a good promotional idea.”

Yet 25 years later, the “Smurf Turf,” as it is sometimes called, is what folks across the country identify with the now nationally ranked Boise State football program. When the program began negotiating with Big East officials a few months ago, UConn President Susan Herbst was chatting informally with reporters at Rentschler Field when the subject of conference realignment came up.

“What’s the story with the blue turf?” she said.

As Boise State football enters the Big East, the blue turf is as much an attraction as the program’s national ranking. And the story of the turf is that it’s the legacy of Bleymaier, who was fired in August after 29 years as AD.

On Bleymaier’s watch, there was enormous growth in the athletic department and the football program evolved into one of the best in the country. He left amid an NCAA investigation involving compliance and “institutional control” issues.

The above pic is of one of my favorite long time blogging buddies, he’s a diehard WV fan, bad news for him once WV entires the Big 12 they will never again see a BCS bowl and just become another one of Texas’s bitches.
