With the announcement that West Virginal and the Big East have reached an agreement (I told you they would) West Virginia to pay 20 million to the Big East plus they must persuade a team to leave early and join in 2012. So the clock ticks who will jump first and what will it take to get them to jump.
First let me say it would be a huge mistake for Boise State to let someone else takes this spot even if it’s for a small dollar amount. The fact is Boise State should also call FSU right now and add that game and here is why. Three out of conference games against Michigan State, BYU and Florida State unlike other years will have ZERO impact on Boise State ability to make a BCS bowl! Fact is Boise State could lose all three and make a BCS bowl just by winning an already weak conference. West Virginia being the strongest team in the conference right now leaving opens the door. The payment to a AQ school going to a BCS bowl vs. NON AQ is more than double, as well think of the improving recruiting that can go on as we make those trips east ward .
As for what do we do with the other sports Murphy said it best in a twit.
As for MWC football they will still have 9 teams to play an 8 game conference schedule so we would be leaving no one out in the cold.
So let’s look who West Virginias options are.
Houston C-USA
SMU C-USA
UFC C-USA
San Diego State MWC
The good news is C-USA buy out is 7 million which is 2 million more than MWC the bad news is they might sit down and do the math and figure out without Boise State in the mix they have a reasonable shot at getting into a BCS game which will more than make it worth it . I don’t know the details but I just don’t think Memphis would be an acceptable replacement all things considered they need time to get their program even on a Big Sky level they just don’t have any money and certainly need a year of recruiting under their belt as a future Big East team. Then there is San Diego State I could see them jumping.
All things being equal this move is like the time value of money the earlier you start to save the more money you have when it’s time to retire. Leaving early has much value and that value is not only in the TV money and bowl opportunities. Whatever team takes this leap will be ahead in every aspect, level of play one more year under their belt then the teams coming in 2013, travel and experience recruiting in every aspect when you look at the value of going now vs. later without question which ever new school makes the jump this year will have an advantage over the school that enter next year.
If Boise State intends to be a leader in college football it has to make this move failure to do will only give another school the chance to steal their claim to the future.
Dr. Kustra the clock is ticking what you going to do ?? If you pass I sure hope you have a future TCU move up your selves otherwise we might find ourselves playing catch up after already running a Marathon.
