The Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 1-0 in 16 innings last night at the Trop. Like the 19 inning game the Phillies and Reds played earlier this year, this one was full of interesting box score lines and occurrences. For instance:
- The game lasted 5 hours and 44 minutes, the longest game in Rays history and about the typical length of a Yankee-Red Sox game
- The teams combined for 8 hits, or 1 every 2 innings
- Dustin Pedroia was the only guy to have more than 1 hit (3)
- There was only 1 extra-base hit (Pedroia, a double)
- Jacoby Ellsbury was 0-8
- In 8 innings, the Rays bullpen walked 10 batters
- Of the 24 baserunners in the game, 8 got a hit, 13 walked, and 3 were hit by pitches
- The 2 starting pitchers combined for 16.0 innings, 3 hits, 2 walks, and 16 strikeouts
- Every Red Sox pitcher recorded a strikeout, every Rays pitcher but two issued a walk
- The Rays used 9 pitchers, including all 8 members of their bullpen
- The Rays also used 12 position players meaning that the only 4 guys who didn’t play last night for Tampa, were the four members of the starting rotation not scheduled to pitch
- Tampa manager Joe Madden and bench coach Dave Martinez were both ejected in separate incidents in the 11th inning. Perhaps they just got tired.
