Sunday’s All-Star game will mark the first time Brad Stevens and the Celtics coaching staff will be in charge of the Eastern Conference team. Normally, this honor goes to the team in the top spot in the respective conference, but no coach is allowed to do it two years in a row. Since the Cavs coaching staff and head coach Tyronn Lue did it last year, it opened up the floor for the Celtics coaches to show their stuff.
Most of the talk this year has been on the Western Conference and the plethora of Golden State players on the team. They have the most players from a single team with four, but the bigger story has been about Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant.
This will be the first All-Star game together since KD’s much maligned exit from the Thunder. How will they react? Will they make up? These questions have been on the mind of every analyst and media personality ever since the rosters were announced. The head coach of the West, Steve Kerr, said he was considering playing the two players on the court at the same time, but who knows how that will turn out.
For Stevens, Sunday’s game will show the rest of the league how accomplished of a coach he has become. He already is one of the youngest coaches in the NBA, second only to Tyronn Lue. Seeing the Celtics play shows just how connected they are as a team and how much they enjoy playing together. Hopefully he can bring the same type of energy and togetherness to the Eastern All-Stars.
