The Bruins had a great weekend, winning both of their games on back to back nights, as they beat the Buffalo Sabers 4-1, and then turning around at home beat the Toronto Maple Leafs at home 3-2. They needed these four points badly, as they had lost their previous three in a row. The games went well for the Bruins, as Friday night they controlled the pace of play and had all of the momentum. Saturday night was more of a back and fourth type of game but the Bruins got the better of the Maple Leafs.
Friday night, the Sabers may have started the scoring, as David Legwand scored after 14:37 in the first period, but it was all Bruins rolling from there. The Bruins scored quickly in the second as after 1 minute Matt Beleskey tied the game up, assisted by Spooner and Eriksson. They started the third off quickly as well, as this time it only took less than 30 seconds for the Bruins to score, as Chara from Spooner and Beleskey took the lead 2-1. Then after two assists Ryan Spooner decided to put one in himself, as he scored making it three to one. Finally Brett Connolly scored an empty netter to make it 4-1 and a nice two points for the Bruins.
Saturday night the Bruins continued the trend of quick scoring, as it took the Bruins 45 seconds to take a 1-0 lead, on Patrice Bergeron 16th goal on the season from Krug and Miller. The Maple Leafs would tie it up four minutes later, as Leo Komarov scored from Kadri and Phaneuf. The scored remained tied 1-1 through the first period. Then Patrice Bergeron and the Bruins for the fourth time in two games scored within the first minute of the period, as Chara and Trotman set him up for his second goal of the game. The Leafs would once again tie it up, before the end of the period as Shawn Matthias scored from Tyler Bozak. In the third period the game was still tied until a late last minute goal from Brad Marchand, unassisted, won the Bruins the game 3-2. Securing two more points on the weekend. The Bruins out shot the Leafs 45-29. Tuukka Rask gets the win.
The Bruins now sit in third place in the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference, with 51 points. They hold the six seed if the playoffs started today. With the season now more than half way over, 44 out of 82 games played, the Bruins in the month of February with the all-star break, should come out and finish the last third strong and make a run to be a contender. As we stand now, the Washington Capitals lead by Alex Ovechkin are the best team in the NHL with 69 points, and to put that in perspective the next best team, Chicago Blackhawks have 64, and only the Dallas Stars are the other team with over 60 points, at 63. In my opinion it is a toss up on MVP between Patrick Kane and Ovechkin.
