Welcome to The Inscriber: Digital Magazine’s Wednesday evening news roundup, The Byline Monday Evening Report, will feature a compilation of news events that are current and relevant.
Short and sweet, The Byline Report will touch upon events with a blurb of facts and information, along with a small percentage of opinion.
Without further ado, here are the news events for Wednesday evening, September 18th, that are making headlines:
Browns Trade RB Trent Richardson To Colts. Only In Cleveland would a dysfunctional and border-line incompetent franchise such as the Browns trade their first-round pick from last year for a possible—at best mid-level—pick in the 2014 NFL Draft for another unproven commodity.
But this is Mike Lombardi and the Cleveland Browns we are talking about here folks! The Factory Of Sadness strikes again!
Richardson, the Browns first-round pick—third overall in the 2012 NFL Draft—was traded to the Indianapolis Colts for their first-rounder in 2014. For the year, Richardson averaged 3.4 yards a carry(!!) behind a horrid and atrocious offensive line, while trying to channel his inner Jamal Lewis—stutter-step and all.
While some—let me rephrase that, MANY Browns fans are now livid to the point of cancelling their season tickets and possibly burning their jerseys in both effigy and protest, Cleveland not only trades away it’s best offensive player to a playoff team, but also a possible cornerstone in the popular Richardson. Browns Name Third-String QB Brian Hoyer Starter vs. Vikings. Mind you that the Richardson bombshell came AFTER they announced third-string quarterback and local product(Cleveland St. Ignatius)Brian Hoyer will start on the road against the Minnesota Vikings.
Talk about pulling the proverbial wool over your own fanbase’s eyes, right?
With an obvious tank job well underway in Cleveland, Browns fans can at LEAST look forward to a star-studded and loaded 2014 NFL Draft that will feature perhaps the deepest QB class in recent memory in UCLA’s Brett Hundley, Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel, Clemson’s Tajh Boyd and Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater, as well as two picks in the first, one in the second, two in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh, don’t be shocked to see the Browns stockpile and use their picks to grab players in April, and load up on a top-notch franchise signal caller for the first time since the days of Bernie Kosar.
Whether or not this was either, bold, brave or purely bone-headed, it is anything but wise in dealing your best offensive weapon, such as Richardson was to the Browns.
Hey, if the Colt’s can go from 3-13 to 11-5 in one year, so can Cleveland. Bridgewater Bowl vs Jacksonville, here we come!
Mack Brown’s Job On The Line vs. Kansas State? How does a former BCS championship winning coach find his job in jeopardy?
Simple.
You coach one of the largest and most watched college football programs in the country—complete with it’s own off-shoot wanna-be network, rabid fans in an even MORE obsessed and crazy football-loving state such as Texas, where you are judged by how many titles you’ve won and how many times you’ve beaten Oklahoma, find himself on the outs?
How about going 0-5 vs lowly Kansas State(and 2-7 overall).
Kansas State? Yup! THAT Kansas State, stuck in the geographic middle of irrelevance by playing in Manhattan(seriously! Google Manhattan, Kansas, please!) and allow your defense to be used as a personal turnstile for the BYU Cougars in giving up a RECORD 550 rushing yards(that is NOT a typo!)
Presto!
Mack Brown’s long and monotonously inglorious run as the big Bevo in Austin may be coming to an abrupt end.
Since 2010, Texas is 23-10, Oklahoma is 35-8, Oklahoma State is 34-8, Kansas State is 30-12, Texas Tech is 24-17 and even Baylor has a better record of 27-14 and former little brother in Texas A&M grew a set in moving to the SEC and posting a 29-13 mark.
If you’re a Horns fan, you know it’s bad when the Aggies have room to talk some smack on you.
News & Notes : Former Heavyweight Champ Ken Horton Sr, Dead At 70, the man who beat Muhammad Ali in 1973, and the father of former NFL linebacker, Ken Norton Jr. died of congestive heart failure. Known by nicknames such as “The Jaw Breaker” and “The Fighting Marine” and an unorthodox fighting stance, Norton Sr. complied a record of 42 wins—33 by knockout—seven losses and one draw.
FC Basel Stuns Chelsea, Arsenal Wins at Marseille, Messi Nets Hat Trick In Champions League Thanks to a rare home 2-1 loss at Stamford Bridge, defending Europa League champion, Chelsea find themselves in a tough spot of now going to Switzerland and try to win the away leg on Basel’s home pitch. Goals from Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey help fire Arsenal past Ligue 1 side, Marseille, 2-1 in France, securing Arsenal’s record tenth straight away win in all competitions and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi netted a hat trick in a 4-0 win over Dutch side, Ajax.
