In the span of just a few days, Celtics faithful have gone from the depths of fandom to being surprisingly hopeful. The Celtics have two games remaining on the schedule and are currently tied with the Cavaliers for first place.
After a crushing defeat at the hands of the Cavaliers last Wednesday, all hope seemed lost for the top seed. The Cavs had a full game on Boston and won the season series 3-1. That hope dwindled even further as the Celtics dropped their next game against the Hawks. Thankfully the Cavaliers felt like lending a helping hand to their Eastern Conference rivals.
The Cavaliers had an equally rough stretch after their beat down of the Celtics. Coincidentally, it was against the same team that gave the Celtics trouble just the other day. Cleveland lost back to back games against the Atlanta Haws, dropping the latest in overtime. Despite a 45 point performance from Kyrie and a triple-double from Lebron, the Cavs couldn’t keep their lead. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers had a 26 point lead. That was later relinquished as Paul Millsap tied the game up with a buzzer beater two.
According to ESPN, the Cavs are planning to rest the big three against the Heat tonight. They either have supreme confidence in their bench, or they really don’t care about the top spot. The Celtics should be looking to take advantage of Cleveland’s stars resting. With their own game tonight, we’ll have to wait and see how they respond.
