Isaiah Thomas said it perfectly. “We laid an egg”. It was a frustrating night for the boys in green as they got blown out by the Cavaliers 91-114. Lebron James and company came out with a purpose and dominated the Celtics in nearly every category. It was surprising to see such a dominant performance from the defending champs. Given their recent struggles and injuries to key players, the Celtics were expected to put up more of a fight than they did.
Cleveland played without big man Tristan Thompson for the first time in five years. Since he is their biggest rebounding threat, the thought was the Celtics could keep up with them. Not the case. Kevin Love was a couple rebounds short of double digits…in the first quarter. In the beginning of the game, it seemed like the Cavs was getting every rebound on both ends of the floor. To compound the problem, Boston struggled shooting from the field. They shot only 40% from the field and just over 20% from three.
Even more frustrating for Boston was the fact that Cleveland’s record on the second night of a back-to-back was only 1-9. Going into Boston, everything was in favor of the Celtics. Once the second quarter came, the game was just about over. Lebron came out with a vengeance, scoring 15 points in the second quarter and single handedly taking over the game. Not to mention he had two monster blocks that killed any momentum the Celtics could muster.
This game was huge for both teams, and the Cavaliers showed how much it meant to them. With the number one seed essentially in hand for Cleveland, the Celtics have to bounce back and get some momentum tonight against Atlanta. With Atlanta on the downswing, hopefully the C’s can come away with a much needed victory.
