Miami Dolphins CEO Mike Dee is leaving the organization to become the President and CEO of the San Diego Padres. Dee, who took over the role of Dolphins CEO in 2009, will remain with the team for the next few weeks before making the trip to San Diego.
The Dolphins' business model of splitting the franchise into a football operations side and a business operations side is expected to remain in tact. With this model, General Manager Jeff Ireland and the CEO report to owner Stephen Ross but not to each other.
Dee's departure ends an overall disappointing tenure in Miami. Despite organizing many successful charity events over the past few years as well as returning the Dolphins fight song to home games, it will be overshadowed by the fact that revenue remained low and the effort to upgrade Sun Life Stadium with public funding, failed.
There was no denying Mike Dee's passion for the team, however he was ultimatley unable to accomplish what he was hired for.
Expect the Dolphins decision on a new CEO that will solely be in charge of the business aspect, to take some time. Once the new CEO is named, however, he will have a lot on his plate to deal with. The effort to gain public funding for stadium renovations will surely be revisted in the furture and increasing the amount of Dolphins season ticket holders will be a top priority. Unless the Dolphins end the streak of four consecutive losing seasons, it will be challenging to build upon the current total of 40,000 season ticket holders.
