Cleveland Browns: Can QB Jason Campbell provide the Spark?

It finally happened Cleveland Browns fans. Orange-and-brown back-up quarterback, Jason Campbell will get the start against the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. Is this a case of be careful what you wish for? Or is this the spark that will jumpstart the Browns offense?

Former first round pick, Brandon Weeden‘s future wearing an orange helmet may have come to an abrubt end. Weeden, after being named QB1 to start the 2013 campaign, has been awful in the five games he has played this season. With a body of work of 19 NFL starts and 20 games played, Weeden has a 70.9 rating, 19 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions. In his most likely end of his Browns career, Weeden threw for 4,539 yards and completed just 56.2% of his passes. In the end, it is clear that Weeden just didn’t have “IT”. What is “IT” – all the intangibles to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. Just having a rocket arm is not enough. Could Weeden be dealt in a trade soon?

On Sunday, the Browns will make Campbell their 20th starter since 1999. But, Cleveland diehards have to feel a little better. The 31-year-old has played in 78 career regular season games, with his best year coming in 2009 where he threw for 3,618 yards and 20 touchdowns. Campbell is no stranger to playing the Chiefs either.

In 2010, Campbell played for the Oakland Raiders in the AFC West. In the three games he has faced the Chiefs, Campbell is 2-1 with 483 yards passing, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. While those are not overwhelming numbers, the fact that he has familiarity with Chiefs may be an advantage. There is no reason to believe that Campbell will not put forth better efforts against the Chiefs. While the Browns will most likely be in the loss column, Campbell’s experience, mobility, and leadership should at the very least be refreshing on Sunday.
