It was clear as day that Cleveland Browns return specialist and wide receiver, Travis Benjamin would get some serious consideration for AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Benjamin’s 179-yard performance against the Buffalo Bills set a franchise record for punt return yards in a game. His run sparked the team as the Browns went on to 37-24.
The former fourth round pick from the Miami Hurricanes is the second Brown to earn the honors this season. Cleveland punter, Spencer Lanning won the same award in week three. This is also the second special teams award in three weeks for the Browns.
With his frighteningly fast speed, Benjamin ripped off a dazzling 79-yard touchdown and a cut-back 57-yard return in the same half. Because Benjamin sliced up the Buffalo punt defense team, the Bills sent punter, Shawn Powell packing the very next day.
Benjamin (aka, Ricky Bobby) has been the perfect replacement for the former Brown, Josh Cribbs. Benjamin should have had two returns for touchdowns in the preseason, but one was called back due to a holding penalty on the opposite side of the field. Benjamin is a game changer and must keep the momentum going against the Detroit Lions this Sunday. The Browns will need Benjamin to continue his excellent returning capabilities for the next eleven games.
