Yan Gomes : Cleveland Indians Add Another Hero to the List

On a day where superhero Marvel movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier started filming on East 6th, the Cleveland Indians played an early afternoon game. This wrapped up their four-game series with the Seattle Mariners. The Tribe also found their own super hero and his name is Yan Gomes.

In a rocky start for Indians left-hander, Scott Kazmir, the offense picked him up. Once again in dramatic fashion, the Indians turned more believers in today’s performance. The Indians hit three more home runs today as a team. However, it was Gomes that came to the rescue throughout the entire afternoon.

Like the heart pounding finishes of the mid-90’s, Gomes stepped up to the plate in the tenth in a guarantee sacrifice bunt situation. Gomes looked completely lost attempting to square up and failed to lay one down. After working the count full against the south paw, Charlie Furbush, Gomes hit a towering ball to left that eventually landed a few rows up the bleachers when it came down. The Indians won 10-8 in the bottom-of-the-tenth inning.

Besides the fact the Indians are now 18-4 in their last 22 games, what’s more impressive is the fashion the games are won in. In today’s game, twice the Indians were down by a run in their final at bat and somehow prevailed. It appears that the comradery between the players doesn’t just end in the locker room. Players are picking each other up by making plays on the field. There is something special going on Cleveland, OH and the fans feel it brewing. Both Facebook and Twitter feeds were trending before, during, and after the dramatic finish.

The sweep marked the second four game sweep of the season for the Indians, as they also swept Oakland earlier in the month. In fact, the Tribe is 14-3 in the month of May with 11 games left.

The Detroit Tigers arrive in town Tuesday and Wednesday for a quick two-game series.
