Reports of the financial offer reportedly being made to Petersen point to demonstration #2 being satisfied; the question behind demonstration #1 is not as easy to answer. Chris Petersen is certainly a good coach, and one of the big names in today’s coaching market. But deciding to offer him the head coaching position, or at least place him on the short list of candidates, is not exactly a tough decision. UCLA football: Why Petersen might agree

All 11 defensive starters for the 10-1 Broncos are seniors, as are seven offensive starters. Quarterback Kellen Moore, who has put together three consecutive 3,000-yard seasons, is one of those seniors.
– There is much uncertainty over Boise State’s future conference affiliation. The Broncos are looking at the Big East for football but have no obvious place to put their other sports.

Plus, it must have occurred to Petersen at some point that there isn’t much ceiling left at Boise State, not when he’s won 71 of 77 games. In nine years, Karl Dorrell and Rick Neuheisel combined to win 56 at UCLA

Boise State Coach Chris Petersen Eyed by UCLA

I’m not suggesting whether or not Petersen should leave Boise, but if there was ever a good time to leave the Broncos it would be now, considering Heisman candidate Kellen Moore will be entering the NFL draft. Furthermore, Los Angeles is an obvious haven for recruiting and Petersen will challenge Lane Kiffin to attract local talent to UCLA over rival USC.  If ever the Bruins had dreams of national championships in the near term, Petersen could be the man to pave that path. read more here.

Those are some of th more recent comments .. Here is my take on this annual tradition.

History is a fickle thing, and how one wants to be remembered in history may vary by one’s own expectation. In the history of the Western Civilization there are a few names that stand out, but most are recent history, history in our time JFK, Ronald Reagan, Margret Thatcher, go a little further back in time there is Stalin, Hitler Tojo and FDR. Real lasting history however is rarer still and one that encompasses centuries and legend only grows over time are left to the few like the founding Fathers how many of us can name most of the signers of the declaration of independence, most and the same is true of just about every person in the western civilization of any nation, Jefferson, Madison roll off their tongues as easily as those who help frame and supported the document but didn’t sign it, Franklin Washington.

In college football there is even few names that stand out, Knute Rockne, Fritz Chrysler, Bear Bryant more recent history Woody Hays and Bo Schembechler.  Of all the coaches’ today only one really stands out as a coach that has a chance at historical greatness, and that’s Les Miles of LSU, why? Simple he stayed! Like all other great coaches of the past Les Miles stayed and continued a path of greatness for LSU. Certainly some might argue he did by mistake, but isn’t that his way after all. No doubt Les Miles will never leave LSU of his own accord, not saying something might not knock him off like what happened to Woody, but certainly baring a scandal as bad and haus as what happened under Joe Pa at Penn State of all the coaches out there today Les Miles has the clear road to the history books. Like Woody Hays, Miles does have some competition for the stop of historic glory of these times and that is Chris Petersen of Boise State, in fact at the rate Boise State is progressing with all the potential for growth within the community and on campus, Chris Petersen is the only coach of modern times who has the potential to rise up to the status of a Bear Bryant or Knute Rockne.

No one knows what is in Coach Petersen mind or heart, we all wish we did, we hope that he’s in it to win it, we hope he shares our vision of Boise States future. I struggle with the very same thoughts you all have about what to say, what to think. Coach has certainly done everything he could to help improve this school, no doubt about it, he’s used every bit of leverage to the betterment of Boise State, other than holding a press conference like Bo Schembechler did back in the 80’s saying he would never leave Michigan for the NFL, we have to go by his actions. While everything does point to the fact he gets it , that he loves Boise State he does fall short of saying it’s a forever thing, and this is the gap he leave’s .

Coach Pete I believe is going to face his Les Miles moment this off season, while Les’s greed caused him to lose his dream job, it did however set  him forever in the orals of LSU history to be forever loved and if he completes this journey to win another national title for the Tigers, he’ll go down in College Football history as the one who put LSU on the map forever. With so many openings this year, so much available at a time when Boise State is graduating it best class of players ever, some speculate that this is the time for Coach Pete to move on, that he’s done all he can do for Boise State and now he must think of his legacy or even take on a new challenge. If he feels that way I’m fine with that, if he desires to be the next Nick Sabin a foot note in history I can think of worse things to be. However if he’s committed like I believe he is, it’s time to give up the power card after this off season, that card being get this done or I’m gone card, he has just about everything he’s asked for, stadium expansion, new facilities, better academic’s and a commitment to continually improvement on all these things. The only thing I can see him still holding on to that card for is conference negotiations. After the debacle the MWC terms turned out to be. In the end Coach has to put this merry go round to rest, he needs to stand up for the State the City and the University and say loudly and proudly Boise State is my home Boise State is my Future and Boise State is a Final destination.  If he does that the mere act alone propels the University in standing and stature, if he does that the fan base can exhale every December and breathe in and out, if he does that recruits will be more faithful, if he does that the second chapter of the history books can begin to be written. Failure to do so leaves the fans base with a sense of vulnerability and living in constant fear, that’s just not fair to those that believe Boise is a final destination, that Boise is the future that Boise’s best days are still ahead of it.

The coach of Boise State has the opportunity to build something from the ground up to, take it to the top of the heap to establish for all times a program. Folks in this day and age this type of opportunity just isn’t around every corner, in fact with the stabilization of population growth it may never come around again. Only an area so vast and so habitable such as Boise will truly see real growth in the future. Since the 1980’s Boise’s area population has increased 500% and it has more than enough room to do that again and I believe it will. More to the point Boise is a very young community and still most of its residence are transplants, it’s upon their conversion and more so their off spring who will stay and live and work in Boise, this is the future of Bronco Nations fan base. This is the potential for greatness this is the potential for history. Boise hasn’t peaked, it’s just starting! Boise is a destination not a stopover and the coach that stays and builds and grows with this community will be the one that history will record.

Certainly like all other Great coaches someone else either left for greener pastures or was shown the door due to lack of performance but make no mistake Boise State is the future raising star, the foundation is built the expectations are there the seedling have sprouted and the sun is shining upon them, there is no dark cloud on the horizon to cause failure even the departure of Chris Petersen isn’t enough to stem the tide. In fact failure to end this constant yearly tradition of courting, it actually might be best that he does leave,, there I said it! You have to understand how this effects recruiting, impact impressions of the school and program to have your coach out there talking to other schools year in year out is not a good thing, sure it’s nice someone else wants what  you have, but the flip side is there is nothing healthy about this constant talking in regards to Boise States program.. nothing!!!!!!

Boise should expect greatness and commitment from its Coach, certainly assistants will come and go no one can fault an assistant coach moving up, but for a team to be great for a program to be great the head has to be firmly committed. Could you imagine Wood Hays taking calls or Bo.. how about Bear? Fat chance! A coach cannot achieve greatness if every year he’s willing to entertain thoughts of another school; the two just do not go together. Les Mile needs this year to make up for the allowed courting by Michigan last year and the years before to overcome his failings. Coach Pete gets a free ride, well because his fan base is in such love with him he can get away with it and the media certainly has sympathy for him because well he coaches at Boise State. And it is there the problem lies for Boise State long term this continued pity party must end.

Boise State has nothing to be ashamed of, quite the opposite is true, they support their program, and their University. They have develop tons of in state talent they have weathered coaching change after coaching change, they have put up the money to reward the program and certainly are willing to share the wealth with incentives for achievement. Boise State is deserving of a coach who will take a stand with them, one willing to stand up and say I am a Boise Man! Like they ask their recruits to do.
