Contract Incentives Speeded up Anthony Spencer Recovery?

1

So, the first rounds of cuts came, and the important storyline was that Anthony Spencer was not placed on PUP or IR return. Jerry Jones says Spencer is way ahead of schedule.

I’m not buying the optimism. In fact, I think Spencer has magically improved enough to be on the active roster, for guess what? For being on the active roster.  Spencer will begin to accumulate incentives in his contract. He can earn up to $250,000 in incentives by being on the active roster. You can say that’s not much, but it’s money and it’s what he’ll get on top of his base salary. Seems a bit convenient.

More from Jerry:

“I can assure you at this time, as close as we are to Week 1, he won’t be ready. But he will be on our active 53-man roster,” Jones said. “We wouldn’t be doing that if we weren’t planning on him being on the field immediately.”

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see Spencer give us some help with the pass rush, but let’s heed some caution. This is Anthony Spencer, he’s not a saving grace and his history of milking the Cowboys for all their worth is well documented. Realistically, Spencer may not be a factor until he’s closer to 100% which may be mid-season at the minimum.
