Cowboys 2013 Selections 1st-6th Rounds

The Cowboys draft is in the bag, and it was an interesting draft to say the least. The Cowboys first two picks had many fans dismayed for quite awhile, but in the overall scheme of things, this collection of rookies upgrade the roster, and we will be better in 2013.  The Cowboys have infused a lot of young talent onto the roster, we still have the rookie redshirts from the previous draft class that will be in the mix as well.

Travis Frederick will likely play center and be the foundation to lead this offensive line. We knew Costa and Cook were not durable and not long-term guys. Frederick gives Romo added peace of mind and should help the guards play better as well. There may have not been a need for another TE, but we have Escobar now, and he will add another wrinkle for the offense and should help keep the defenses on their heels.

I’m pleased with the additions we have made, and we have some guys here that should supplant some older vets, and will provide insurance against injury prone guys. WR Terrance Williams will indeed get playing time and even more once Austin gets his yearly nagging injuries. The RB Joseph Randle selection is money. We all know what we have in Murray, and when he goes down, so does the offense. With Randle, we now have a legit guy that can carry the load, and an upgrade over Felix Jones from last year. Great pick. Time to get behind these picks now!

Round 1 (31): Travis Frederick, C, Wisconsin

Round 2 (47): Gavin Escobar, TE, San Diego State

Round 3 (74): Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor

Round 3 (80): J.J. Wilcox, S, Georgia Southern

Round 4 (114): B.W. Webb, CB, William & Mary

Round 5 (151): Joseph Randle, RB, Oklahoma State

Round 6 (185): DeVonte Holloman, LB, South Carolina

We needed to address offensive line in the first rounds and we did. The only question that remains now, is what do we do with Doug Free. We didn’t get a tackle, so as of right now Free is the starting RT and that still scares me. The solution should be signing Eric Winston now that we know what we have post-draft.

We should  start seeing some undrafted free agents being signed soon after the draft ends, and this has been a strong area for the Cowboys for years, so lets see who we nab. I’m sure someone will be a player for us in 2013.
