There’s nothing really surprising about DeMarco Murray leaving the Cowboys in free agency; albeit, it does irk every die hard fan that he left for the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys reportedly had a value of about $5mil per year deal on the table for Murray and they had no real plans in matching any deals above that, they really didn’t
If you didn’t believe the Cowboys brass had turned the corner when it comes to handing out gigantic contracts, the decision to let Murray should clinch that for everyone moving forward. The Cowboys had a plan in place for Murray and our other pending free agents and they are executing it now.
We’ve set numbers and players are leaving, it’s not personal, it’s business.
To me, the Cowboys have set this plan in motion a few years ago, and you can say it started with the introduction of Jason Garrett as the head coach. The Cowboys have invested heavily on the offensive line, which in turn, would give the Cowboys the leverage against paying a cost prohibitive running back. Murray got paid big.
DeMarco Murray’s deal with Eagles is expected to be 5 years, $42 million, including $21 million guaranteed, per @mortreport and I.

Those are numbers are what the old thinking Cowboys would have delved out a few years ago; in fact, they gave a grossly ballooned offer to Marion Barber, another physical back. We know what happened, and the Cowboys would not fall into that trap again. Collectively, The Jones family, Jason Garrett and Will McClay have been so methodical in their moves, that on the surface the fans may not see it, but once the season starts, you’ll see it on the field.
The Cowboys are likely going to add another vet running back in free agency. Keep an eye on players like Reggie Bush, Bobby Rainey, or Phillips Tanner. The Cowboys will be drafting a running back within the first three rounds, that much is clear. The upcoming running back draft class is deep with very good backs.
The two guys high on my list are Jay (JTrain) Ajayi and David Johnson.
Congrats to our offensive line, for helping Murray get his new contract. We are going to do a repeat performance with those guys, get ready!
