Cowboys Have Ammo to Move Up

Cowboys Have Ammo to Move UpIts safe to say the Cowboys are done making any other significant free agent moves, we could see another small addition in a backup role, but nothing like an Igor Olshansky type that will be an immediate starter. This being said, the Cowboys are now full speed ahead toward April 25-26 for the NFL Draft. As it stands right now, Jerry & Co. have quietly settled our open roster spots with some solid guys; albeit, some are stop gaps, but Olshansky was a steal who will be starting opposite Spears. Onward to the draft.

Got Ammo?

The Cowboys will head to their war room with plenty of ammo to move up in the draft. The thinking is that the Cowboys have 11 picks (9+2 compensatory) which may be too many players to carry to camp, and I agree. This year, the Cowboys do not have a first round selection, but that could change if the Cowboys wish to package draft picks to move up. Here’s where we stand right now with picks and trade value:

2nd round #51 = 390 pts.
3rd round #69 = 245 pts.
4th round #97 = 112 pts.
4th round #113 = 68 pts.
5th round #148 = 32.2 pts.
5th round #158 = 28.2 pts.
6th round #184 = 17.8 pts.
7th round #193 = 14.2 pts
7th round #210 = 7.4 pts.      TOTAL = 914.8 pts. (by rule our 2 comp. picks cannot be used in trades)

This year you need 590 points to get into the 1st round which would land you the #32 pick.

Getting back into the 1st round

Hypothetically speaking, the Cowboys could roll all their picks this year, but even then they would only be trading up to the #18 pick. I’ve never heard of a team rolling all their picks to get one pick, so that’s out of the question, that won’t be happening.

– Trading our 2nd, 3rd = 635 pts. puts us between #29-#30 (Giants, Titans)
– Trading our 2nd, 3rd, 4th = 747 pts. puts us at #24 (Falcons)
– Trading our 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 4th = 815 pts. puts us at #21 (Eagles)
– Trading our 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 4th, 5th still gets us at #21 (Eagles)
– Trading our 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 4th, 5th, 5th = 875 pts. puts us at #19 (Bucs)

Of course this is just an overview of our picks and their trade value potential, I’m not saying we’ll do any of these scenarios, but it does put everything in context for the sake of discussion, we do have plenty of picks to move into the 1st round if we wanted a guy we absolutely wanted.

Personally, I could see us trading our 2nd, 3rd, 4th round picks to move to #24 pick. This would get us back into the 1st round at a reasonable spot in the 1st round without giving up the rest of our picks. The Falcons would get a good deal here, plus they are a team still rebuilding, and these added picks could be attractive to them.

Getting another 2nd round pick

Another scenario could let the Cowboys trade up into the 2nd round, you need 270 pts. to get into the 2nd round which gets you at #64

– Trading our 3rd, 4th = 357 pts. puts us at between #54-55 (Vikings, Falcons)

– Trading our 3rd, 4th, 4th =  425 pts. puts us at #48 (Broncos)

– Trading our 3rd, 4th, 4th, 5th = 457 pts. puts us between #44-45 (Dolphins, Giants)

Again, this highlights our ability to move up relatively easily up the 2nd round as well, if we wanted to

The Cowboys could also do this in the 3rd round, and so on. Also remember, that when doing draft day trades, we could also see Jerry trade picks for next year as well. Bottom line is that Jerry has set us up very good for the draft with the free agent moves, which can now give us the flexibilty to package picks to move up and get the player they want.

I think if the Cowboys are looking for a certain position and we start to see a “run” on that position, then the Cowboys could have the choice to get in there and get their guy before he’s snatched up. To see more on the trade value chart visit NFLDraftCountdown and play with the points.
