Cowboys have ‘significant’ role for WR Ryan Switzer

NFL: MAY 01 NFL Draft Rounds 2 and 3

The Dallas Cowboys had a terrific regular season in 2016, posting the best record in the NFC. However, their dominance did not continue in the playoffs, where the Cowboys found themselves one-and-done, losing to the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round of the playoffs. In the 2017 NFL draft, the Cowboys looked to add more weapons to their already stacked roster. The 2016 draft was kind to Dallas, landing them both quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliot. If the Cowboys could repeat the same type of successful draft this year, then it could be just what they need to make it to Super Bowl LII and set the stage for a run of dominance that the franchise hasn’t seen since the 1990’s.

One of the Cowboys draftees that is really making some noise is wide receiver Ryan Switzer. Switzer was drafted in the fourth round of the 2017 draft, and many are seeing him as a comparable player to Cole Beasley, Dallas’ leading receiver in 2016. Both are quick, short, gritty players that could prove to be valuable weapons for Prescott to throw to in 2017. Initially, thoughts were that Switzer was being targeted as a replacement for Beasley, but rumors out of Dallas suggest that the Cowboys are planning on using both of them as a dual-threat in the slot, similar to how the New England Patriots use a two-pronged attack of Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola. If that is truly the case, then those of you interested in NFL betting may want to put some wagers down on the Cowboys for this coming season.

In camp, Switzer is already seeing a lot of heavy reps, indicating that the coaching staff is high on the rookie and is looking for him to have a big impact in 2017. All signs are pointing to Switzer being more than just a replacement player or a reserve. If he truly is going to be used alongside Beasley in the slot, then NFC teams will likely have their hands full trying to contain the two players. It could add a unique wrinkle to the Dallas offense, which is already tricky to defend due to the dual threat of Prescott and Elliot on the ground. Adding two quick receiving threats to the mix could make an already potent Cowboys’ offense borderline undefendable.

Only time will tell if Switzer can live up to the preseason hype, but if he does, then the NFC had better watch out. There may be another high-powered offense to challenge the reigning NFC Champion Atlanta Falcons, and it just might catapult “The Boys” to Minneapolis this coming February.
