Cowboys Want Winston, Asking Free to take pay cut

A few days ago, free agent OT Eric Winston was linked to the Cowboys as a possible addition to the team. With Doug Free having become a certified liability, the Cowboys are in the market for a new RT. Eric Winston has been a solid tackle in the league for years, and would become an instant upgrade over Free. If the Cowboys are looking to give Tony Romo a chance this year, adding Winston would give the line some legitimacy, but with more work needed at guard and center. Having a legitimate RT could help the Cowboys draft strategy as well.

NFL Network’s insider Ian Rapoport suggests the Cowboys desire to restructure Free is an effort to get more cash to sign Winston.

The Dallas Cowboys have asked starting right tackle Doug Free to take a pay cut from his $7 million salary due in 2013, according to two sources with knowledge of the team’s intentions.

The move would free up money for the Cowboys to be able to sign free-agent offensive tackle Eric Winston. (NFL.com)
