Out with the old and in with the new with the Red Sox as Ben Cheringtion declines opportunity to continue as Red Sox GM. All this after the Red Sox hired former Detroit Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski as the head of baseball operations. This is something new for the Sox as we have not seen a head of baseball operations before. Cheringtion was given the option to stay with the Sox as GM but declined the offer. All of this is taking effect immediately Dombrowski is on his way to Boston either tonight or early tomorrow morning. So the Red Sox are in the hunt for a new GM as we speak, it will be very interesting to see who the next GM of the Sox is.

Dombrowski had this to say about joining the Red Sox. “I want to thank John and Tom for this opportunity. Although I did have other potential options within baseball, there was no option that stood out as clearly as the chance to come to Boston and win with the Red Sox. Boston is a baseball city like no other and its history and tradition are unique in our game. I express to John and Tom that Boston would be my absolute top choice and am honored to have a chance to serve Red Sox Nation.”

John Henry also had this to say about Dombrowski. “I have known Dave very well for a long time. Tom and I have no doubts that Dave is the right person to strengthen our baseball operations group going forward. He is one of the most highly regarded executives in all of baseball, and had options to go with other Clubs. We feel very fortunate that he wanted to further his career-now with the Red Sox- as one of the great architects of winning baseball clubs.”

John Henry also had this to say about Ben Cherington. “Ben Cherington is one of the finest individuals I have ever worked with, possessing a maturity and integrity second to none. Over seventeen years with the Red Sox and in the four years as our general manager, he always put the best interest of our organization first and foremost, winning a World Series Championship in 2013”

Dombrowski is a real baseball guy, he won four straight AL Central championships with the Tigers from 2011-2014. He is not focused on the numbers side and more the other components of baseball, this also being a new thing for the Sox. Dombrowski has past history with Red Sox owner John Henry as he worked for him when he owned the Marlins. These next 6 months are going to be very interesting to see how Dombrowski gets the Sox back on track. A press conference is scheduled for 2 PM tomorrow.
