Wide receiver is priority number one heading into the draft. It has been since last season and in reality it has been even before the Rams drafted Jared Goff.
Les Snead needs to come away with a quality wide out with the 37th overall pick and beyond that find other weapons because as it stands the Rams have little to work with.
The Rams have begun doing their homework and ensuring that beyond the draft they will have options and not put a ton of pressure on whomever they select in the second round. This week the Rams brought in former Purdue wide receiver DeAngelo Yancey for work outs and while that name might not light up message boards, its a sign that the Rams are casting a dragnet in order to find Goff some help.
DeAngelo Yancey didn’t exactly emerge as a premier college receiver and even at Purdue wasn’t the most productive receiver but he has a lot of tools that Sean McVay might be able to use.
For one thing he’s 6’2 and that would put him heads and tails above Tavon Austin and the 6’0 Robert Woods. He only had 2,500 yards and 20 touchdowns in college but his ability to break free from coverage and make home run plays would obviously come in handy.
DeAngelo Yancey obviously won’t be taken in in round two but there’s no reason why he wouldn’t make a later round addition. Outside of Austin and Woods, the only receiver that will be part of the team will be Pharoah Cooper and even then he’s not guaranteed to be an impact guy.
Having a vertical threat who can shake coverage and never lose his stride is something the Rams can’t ignore. Yancey might not even be on the team but no matter what happens fans can at least can’t complain that the Les Snead and the rest of the front office didn’t put in the work.
