Dennis Pitta says Marty Mornhinweg can ‘spark’ Ravens offense

Head coach Marty Mornhinweg

Joe Flacco took responsibility for the Ravens’ offensive struggles on Wednesday, but in general the Ravens stood behind the firing of offensive coordinator Marc Trestman.

On a personal level they were sorry to see Trestman go, but they knew a change was needed.

“We were in kind of a bad place,” tight end Dennis Pitta told The Baltimore Sun. “It didn’t seem like we were getting out of it. Hopefully, this will spark us. Marty is a great coach, and we have a lot of faith in him. He brings an energy and an excitement to our offense that we needed.”

New offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will try to fix an offense that ranks 22nd in the NFL. Despite the addition of Mike Wallace and a healthy Breshad Perriman, who ran as fast as 4.24 in the 40-yard dash last year at his pro day, Joe Flacco is averaging 5.9 yards per passing attempt this season. That ties him with Blaine Gabbert for last among starting quarterbacks, and Gabbert just lost his starting job.

The Ravens were 5-11 last season, but it was hard to blame that on Trestman because they had a slew of injuries. They started 3-0 this season before losing two straight and made the change at offensive coordinator with the hope that the losses don’t keep piling up.
