Tonight in New York City, with some of the biggest names off the draft board, the Dolphins clued in their fans and media that they would look offensive line with pick #19.
With the selection of Ja’wuan James, out of Tennessee, the Dolphins acquire a big right tackle that could be in the league for years to come. James towers over most offensive linemen at 6’6″ and 311 pounds with 36 inch-arms demonstrates the Dolphins commitment to get better and stronger in an area that had to be addressed. With James, the Dolphins get a player who can play with the big boys right away and make an impact on a rebuilt offensive line. Bottom line, James flat-out moves people which will be critical with the rough and tumble schedule versus pass rushers he’ll face next season.
With tackles Taylor Lewan and Zack Martin off the board early, the Dolphins could have traded back for some picks, but did not and went with a smart pick.
Bottom line, the Dolphins didn’t make the sexy pick, but maybe sexy equals 8-8 and not 11-5 if the Dolphins want to get somewhere next season and most importantly protect their quarterback.
With two more days left of the draft, look for the Dolphins to add a Guard, corner, or even receiver in the coming days.
Gone is the anticipation of the draft and the clock will be ticking on rounds 2 and 3 for the Dolphins new GM Dennis Hickey.
