Dolphins “Longshot” to Land Atogwe

If you were one of the fans constantly surfing around the Internet this morning, hoping to find any rumor suggesting a link between the Dolphins and new free agent safety O.J. Atogwe; don’t get your hopes up. According to Jeff Darlington, a team source has said, “we like what we’ve seen from our safeties so far.”

If you have followed what the Dolphins have said extensively this offseason, then you would already know they like to say one thing and do another. Most notably, they talked up Gibril Wilson then released him shortly after and they hinted that they were content with their current core of receivers then traded for Brandon Marshall.

With that said, don’t count out Atogwe just yet, mainly because the Dolphins previously pursued Antrel Rolle and Ryan Clark. However, I tend to take their word for it in this case. After already dishing out two record breaking deals to Karlos Dansby and Brandon Marshall, I just don’t see the front office overspending for the soon to be 29 Atogwe, who is rehabbing from shoulder surgery and who’s production has dropped off ever since his eight interception 08′ season.

From the looks of things, we will all have to sit back and hope either Chris Clemons or Reshad Jones blossoms into a quality starter at free safety. That is certainly an uncertainty at the moment, but neither one can do any worse than what Gibril Wilson did a year ago, right?
