Today the Dolphins shutout the Chargers 37-0 in their most complete and prolific win of the year. Every phase of the game excelled after a huge first quarter fourth and one stop on defense after head coach Mike McCoy attempted to go for it. This was the first shutout for the Dolphins on the winning end of things since a defensive effort versus the New England Patriots during the 2006 season with head coach Nick Saban at the helm.
The biggest statement today was made by the Miami Dolphins offense, led by quarterback Ryan Tannehill throwing for 288 yards and 3 touchdowns and a 24 of 34 passing the football. Tannehill’s rating of 125.6 puts his game as one of his best, but quite possibly one of the best for the Dolphins.
Said Ryan Tannehill during his post game press conference to the media: “It was a great team win….Words are cheap, we’ve got to go out and do it every week.”
In addition, the Dolphins offensive line has figured out a formula neutralizing the Chargers pass rush and keeping Ryan Tannehill upright. Tannehill did not get sacked on paper since the sack resulted in a hands to the face call against the Chargers as Tannehill was ripped down by his helmet.
Defensively, the Dolphins offense were provided with a short field due to Reshad Jones’ leaping interception, Brent Grimes two interceptions, and finally a late forced fumble and recovery by Jared Odrick. All in all, the Dolphins defensively allowed only 178 yards of offense and 128 of those yards passing.
With head coach Joe Philbin being there for his ailing father for a few days, who passed on Friday night, both offensive coordinator Bill Lazor and Kevin Coyle prepared and ran practice to a T and the team responded for their efforts.
On special teams, kicker Caleb Sturgis continues to struggle beyond 40 yards (missed from 45 yards) and Jarvis Landry is close to lighting up the scoreboard with his punt return game. Jarvis “Juice” Landry at one point took a poor punt with a head of steam and turned it into respectable field position.
Today the Dolphins overall owned the time of possession (36:07), stopped the Chargers with 4 forced turnovers by the defense, and finally put together their best performance from start to finish.
Each week, the Dolphins keep proving the naysayers wrong and with games versus the Lions and Bills upcoming, it’s time for the Dolphins to continue to win big and put themselves into the playoff conversation.
