East Leading Union Host Sounders

The Philadelphia Union meet the Seattle Sounders FC for the first time this season on Saturday at PPL Park. Kickoff is set for 4 PM EDT.  Seattle comes into Philly with a record of 1-2-2, earning five points in their last three matches. The Sounders’ offense has steadily improved from the start of the season. They failed to find the net in their first two games. In the next three matches they have scored five goals.

GK Mondragon has helped the Union to first place in the east

Philadelphia enters this match top of the Eastern Conference with nine points from a possible twelve. The Union are riding a four game unbeaten streak at PPL Park dating back to last season. Their improved defense and goalkeeping has been the key to their strong start. Veteran goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon has been a key contributor to the Union’s hot start. Last season they only managed to record 2 clean sheets, while this year they have three in four matches. The Union’s offense is another story. Their front men have combined to score just 1 goal so far this year and haven’t created many chances either. With so many changes to the Union’s squad, the team and fans hope it is just a matter of time until the offense gels.

Seattle forward Fredy Montero comes into the match questionable after recently undergoing surgery for a fractured right wrist. The Union will be without midfielder Gabe Farfan because of a dislocated toe. Also nursing injuries for Philadelphia are midfielder Brian Carroll who is doubtful and forward Carlos Ruiz who is probable. Both have hamstring strains.

Last season the Union and Sounders split their two league meetings. Seattle won 2-0 in the Union’s first game ever in Major League Soccer. In the return leg Philadelphia won 3-1 at the first ever match at PPL Park.
