Gouveia’s Fantasy Football Mock Draft 1.0

It is finally time for fantasy football! In this mock draft there were ten teams in a normal 16 round snake draft. Below is how my draft went and comments on my picks!

Round: 1

(1 overall) – Eddie Lacy RB: I will take Lacy all day at the number one pick, Le’Veon Bell may be power ranked number one but he is also suspended the first two games of the season. If I am going to spend a top 3 pick on someone I want them there the full year not missing the first two games. I think you will not get a quality game out of Bell till week 4; you are not going to just hop back into it and have a one hundred yard, multi touchdown game your first game back. I just find Bell too much of a risk at the number one pick. With Lacy you know what you are going to get with an average on 4.4 yards per carry and 8.9 yards per reception, he makes it easy for me to choose him at the number one.

Round: 2

(20) – A.J. Green WR: I am a big fan of A.J. Green as most fantasy owners have forgot about him because of his concussion last year. It says it all in the stats he is a hard worker who knows how to move the ball. He has been in the league for four years and still has not had a year were he has failed to rush for a thousand or more yards. For the last pick in the second round I will take Green as I know he is due for a big year this year.

Round: 3

(21) – T.Y. Hilton WR: I think I may have picked up Hilton just a tad early. I find Hilton a very good WR but I don’t see him going till the late twenties or early thirties. But over the last 3 years we have seen nothing but improvement from Hilton. In the 2013 season he had 82 receptions for 1,083 yards. In the 2014 season he also had 82 receptions but 1,345 yards. To have the same amount of receptions but 262 extra yards is impressive and I only expect him to get better and better as his career progresses. So I would suggest picking up Hilton just in the late twenties early thirties.

Round: 4

(40) – Julian Edelman WR: At the 40th overall pick I think Edelman is a great pickup. I expect Edelman to go mid thirties to early forties. If you get the opportunity to pick him up do it. With the way the patriots have been using Edelman in training camp get prepared for some big numbers, he is also consistent you know what he can do and he delivers game after game. His is a primary target for Tom Brady so in a PPR league I would pick him up early and sit on him as he will deliver big numbers. Even if Brady does get the suspension I would still go with Edelman, Garoppolo is going to look to throw to a veteran who he knows will catch the ball and get the first down and Edelman is just that.

Round: 5

(41) – Ben Roethlisberger QB:  At 41 Roethlisberger not a bad pick he was the best available at the time so it was an easy decision. I expect Roethlisberger to go right where he is early forties fits him perfectly. I expect some decent number from Roethlisberger this year as he has a bunch of good receivers who seem to always be open. Roethlisberger’s window has not closed yet after almost throwing for five thousand yards last year on top of thirty two touchdowns and only nine interceptions. Really the only problem I have with this pick is he plays the Patriots in week 1.

Round: 6

(60) – Rashad Jennings RB: I am a big Jennings fan and at 60 overall a good pick. After last year you really don’t know what to expect from Jennings especially with new competition Shane Vereen on the team. Just yesterday the Giants did name Jennings their number 1 running back. So you can expect him to get plenty of reps during the season. He was with the Giants last year and got a little over 625 yards. I expect to see growth out of this pick, and as a bench player on my team he is only going to play a few weeks a year I think he is a good fit. But you do have to be worried about Shane Vereen there is a chance he could take his starting spot at some point in the season and it would not surprise me. So this pick comes with a little risk but should not be too bad.

Round: 7

(61) – Greg Olsen TE: If you want a consistent tight end Olsen is your guy. You can expect him somewhere close to if not over 900 yards and 5 or 6 touchdowns. He is a good all around player; he has great hands and speed. He also has great skill when it comes to blocking he is a wall. He has a long and ongoing relationship with Cam Newton and they work very well together. I don’t like to rely on my TE’s to much as usually they will not win you games all you want is consistent points and with Olsen you will get that. I have had Olsen on past teams and have had no problems.

Round: 8

(80) – Allen Robinson WR: Many don’t know who Robinson is but he is becoming a bigger part of Jaguars every day. He is going into his second year in the league and should have more of an impact then he did last year. He was put into a tight spot last year as Cecli Shorts III got injured only two weeks into the season. Robinson averages 11.4 yards per reception and finished last year with 548 total yards. I see Robinson a player with a lot of potential he really carried his weight last year as a rookie and I only expect him to get better. I find Robinson a low risk, medium reward kind of player.

Round: 9

(81) – Matt Ryan QB: I have never been too much of a fan of Ryan but as a backup QB he will do. He had a decent team last year throwing for 4,694 yards and 28 touchdowns. The problem is he tends to throw a lot of interceptions. The problem for Ryan is he really has nobody to throw too. His biggest target is Julio Jones, he would be worth picking up but I would definitely advise not to get Ryan as a starting QB and keep him as a backup.

Round: 10

(100) – Devonta Freeman RB:  This is more of a sleeper pick. Freeman just sustained a hamstring injury and could be sidelined for “a bit”. But I still think in the latter rounds he might be a good pickup. Last year was his rookie year and he rushed 248 yards and a single touchdown. The Falcons also use Freeman as a receiver as he recorded 225 yards and an average of 7.5 yards per reception. So as they use him for both rushing and receiving he can be a real sleeper pick and has potential to shine this year with the Falcons.

Round: 11

(101) – Breshad Perriman WR: I really took a shot in the dark on this one. Perriman was picked 26th overall by the Baltimore Ravens. I thought he showed a lot of potential at Central Florida and was no surprise he went in the top 30 during the draft.  A lot of experts like to compare Perriman to Josh Gordon because of his height and speed. One down side of this pick is he has been sidelined the past 10 days with a knee injury but should be back in couple more days. I think he will be worth the chance as a backup WR in this coming season.

Round: 12

(120) – Delanie Walker TE:  I know some people may find this a bad pick but needed a back up TE and Walker is known to put up some numbers on occasion. Walker is more of a blocking TE but will still go out for a pass from time to time. Over the past few years he has been targeted more and more Tennessee seems to utilize him perfectly. On average he gains 14.1 yards per reception and you can pencil him in for 4 plus touchdowns this year.

Round: 13

(121) – Seahawks D/ST: There really is no defense better than the Seahawks unless they are playing the Patriots. They have a huge home field advantage and just a solid all around defense. I find defenses a critical part of a Fantasy Football team so I have no problem picking one in round 13 well most will wait till the final two rounds. With the Seahawks defense you can expect 30 plus sacks but the real number is the yards against, last year they let up 4,274 yards this year I would expect them to be in the same range definitely below the 5,000 yard mark. A solid defense takes the pressure off the rest of your team that’s why I am okay with picking the Seahawks early.

Round: 14

(140) – Donald Brown RB: He is who he is; Brown has been in the league for the past 6 seasons and has put up numbers. Not great numbers but decent, I would not rely on Brown on a week to week basis as a starting RB but in a pinch he can do the trick. Some will say he is past his prime with the Colts but still does get some reps in with the Chargers. Last year averaging 2.6 yards a rush and 0 touchdowns, Brown will try to get back to his old ways this year.

Round: 15

(141) – Stephen Gostkowski K: The most consistent kicker in the NFL made it easy for me to select him. The Ghost had 52 extra points last year and was 26 of 30 from the field. When you are looking for a fantasy kicker all you want is consistency, and with the Ghost he will give you consistency game after game. There is a reason he is ranked the best kicker in the league and he lives up to it. He is projected to put up 138 points this year but I will put money down he goes well over 138 points.

Round: 16

(160) – Roy Helu RB: With my final pick in the draft I decided to go with another RB just to make sure I had depth at the position. Helu is in his first year with the Raiders but his fifth year in the league.  In most leagues Helu will go undrafted and he could be a good midseason waiver pick up. In 2014 Helu rushed for 216 yards and 1 touchdown. Currently Helu is working out with the Raiders second-team offence but is still expected to get some regular season reps in.
