The medicals re-checks were to be done today in Indianapolis, and we now have official news on Todd Gurley – he’s good to go. Doctors re-examined his knee and everything is on track for him to be potentially ready for training camp.
With the green light now on Gurley, teams can lock in his draft status on their boards, and I wonder where other teams will have him.
Most teams simply do not have the offensive line to draft a running back in the 1st round and hope to land the next Adrian Peterson, but Todd Gurley is that next special talent in the running game that could sway a team in drafting him despite having a poor offensive line or mediocre.
Gurley is one of my Top 4 running backs the Cowboys will be targeting as he hits on all the physical attributes and all the game attributes. He power run, he’ll take it outside, he catch the ball, and he has the lowest fumble-per-carry ratio amongst his peers, so he’s a complete back.
If the Cowboys wanted Gurley, they probably will need to move up to get him, and moving up to get Gurley may not be a bad idea; however, what will the cost be? It’ll be hefty.
Let’s look at where Gurley could be drafted in the 1st round.
Atlanta would probably be the 1st team that could have some interest in drafting a running back, but I wonder if 8 overall is too rich for them, although it is a need for them. If Atlanta goes to another player, they’ll draft a running back in the 2nd round, and that’s where we could see the run on running backs.
For giggles, what would moving up from #27 to #8 be?
1400 points needed. Cowboys have 680 at #27 and 300 for #60, that’s not enough, unless you’re willing to throw this year’s 1st rounder and next years, and probably more. That’s not going to happen, way too high of a price.
Miami #14 = 1100, still pretty steep
San Diego #17 = 950
Here’s where a trade up come be a bit more palatable. The Cowboys could swap 1st round picks and throw in this year’s 2nd round pick, may have to throw in a later round pick as well, since most trades in recent years have been a bit overpaid and not exactly on par with what the trade chart recommends.
Detroit #23 = 760
The Lions have legitimate interest here, and the Cowboys would likely need to deal their 1st and their 3rd round pick, this trade is even more attractive to the Cowboys. You get your player. The Cowboys will overpay a bit, but this move-up resembles the Cowboys 2010 draft when the Cowboys were at #27 and moved up #24 to get Dez Bryant. Keep an eye on a trade up for Gurley here, if he lasts.
Arizona #24, Carolina #25, and Baltimore #26 could all have interest in Gurley as well.
Arizona could trade with Dallas and again, we’ll send our 3rd round pick. Carolina and Baltimore could trade out and receive our 4th round pick and probably and additional later round pick or future mid-round pick to make that happen.
Would you trade up for Gurley, and how much are you okay in giving up for Gurley? Sound off.
