With just three weeks remaining until the Cowboys are on the clock, we have to wonder if the Cowboys have made enough offseason moves to propel this team to the next level. The 2015 season was full of devastating injuries to marquee positions and the Cowboys did not have any answers on either side of the ball to turn the tide.
At the end of the season it was clear the Cowboys needs were finding a backup QB, one that could be the heir to the position. Additionally, we discovered the pass rush was still anemic as ever. DeMarcus Lawrence led the team with 8 sacks, but no one else was able to get to the QB consistently.
To me, those two issues needed to be addressed during the offseason via free agency and the draft. So, have the Cowboys done enough to address these two areas?
For QB, the answer is emphatically no. The Cowboys are in the same position at backup QB as they were last season. The Cowboys kicked the tires on a few guys, but no signings. Right now, we have Kellen Moore and Jamiel Showers.
As for the pass rush need, the Cowboys chose to forgo another contact with Greg Hardy. Instead the Cowboys decided to bolster the defensive line with Cedric Thornton and Ben Mayowa. Both are seen as possible upgrades over what they had last year. Thornton will be an upgrade over Terrell McClain and Nick Hayden. However, Ben Mayowa is the wild card and the Cowboys are banking on some Will McClay magic on that one — we’ll see.
Jack Crawford also recently re-signed to a 1yr deal, but the need for a premier pass rusher remains.
Conventional wisdom would suggest the Cowboys are still very much in the market for a pass rusher and that could happen with the Cowboys #4 overall pick or possibly with their #34 pick in the second round. It would be baffling to imagine the Cowboys going into the season with the current stable of DEs on the current roster. Lawrence is the only good one.
I think there are few scenarios that would address the Cowboys needs for a future franchise QB and pass rusher, but I’ll go over that tomorrow, so check back.
What do you think, have the Cowboys made enough moves this offseason to improve the team compared to the 2015 roster? Are we relying too much on the draft this year? Let’s hear it.
