Does the Jordan Phillips draft pick make sense?

Raise your hand if you were caught off guard by the second round selection of Oklahoma defensive tackle, Jordan Phillips.

Most experts, analysts and twitter peeps had the Dolphins going with either an offensive lineman or corner back. Both of those positions need depth an could use an upgrade.

So the initial reaction was, why this guy and why this round?

The answer is easy. The last six games the Dolphins defense gave up over 150 yards per game. The front seven consistently was pushed around and wore down late in games.

Phillips is a massive presence inside. He has been labeled an athletic freak. He is a 320 pound man who can do a front flip. That in itself is pretty impressive. Since the decline in play and exit of Paul Solia there has been a gaping hole in the middle of the defense. If Phillips can play to his potential and eat offensive blockers, that would allow star free agent signee Ndmukong Suh and Cam Wake to unleash havoc on opposing quarterbacks with a reckless abandon. The reward definitely outweighs the risk in this scenario. Phins Up!!
