Keeping Up with Latest Roster Moves

The injuries are piling up and you can bet Will McClay has been a very busy man trying to find the best available talent for the Cowboys. You would think the Cowboys were on the Madden cover this year with all the devastating injuries we have incurred this season.

Here are the latest injury updates:

  • Terrell McClain, DT, toe (IR)
  • Tony Romo, QB, clavicle (IR w/return)
  • Dez Bryant, WR, right foot (~8-10 weeks)
  • Orlando Scandrick, CB, knee (IR)

Those are major injuries up and down the roster in key areas.

The Cowboys just traded for QB Matt Cassel, and this is a smart move by the Cowboys. Cassel has won games in this league and he has experience with what the Cowboys like to do on offense. Cassel has some familiarity with the Cowboys offense as he got in work under Norv Turner. As a bonus Cassel may be able to help gameplan against the Cheatriots as well.

Obviously, Turner and Linehan has some different philosophies, but there is some overlap on what they like to do on offense. Cassel won’t take too long picking up the playbook, but I doubt he plays this week. The Cowboys will see what they have in Weeden over the next two weeks, so by week 3 I would expect a possible change if Weeden is laying eggs. The thing I fear the most from Weeden are the turnovers, he’s had some really bad bone-head turnovers.

The Cowboys have also added RB Gus Johnson back to the practice squad — good! Johnson is a player they clearly like and could provide us with physical play this year and definitely next season if he can stick around.

The Cowboys have traded for several players in the past two weeks. We have added WR Brice Butler from the Raiders, and RB Christine Michael from the Seahawks. What I like from the front office are the trades for high draft picks, so they aren’t mortgaging anything significant here — very smart.

Defensively, the Cowboys will be getting more firepower to an already good defense. Greg Hardy and Rolando McClain will be back for a key game against the Cheatriots. Randy Gregory will likely be ready a week or two after that, and we saw him draw attention from the Giants, he’s going to give this defense another spark.
