LA Rams, 49ers To Vie For Pierre Garcon?

NFL: Washington Redskins at Chicago Bears

<![CDATA[If free-agent wide receiver Pierre Garcon's playing career in Washington is over, his next destination likely will be the West Coast.

Whether that the upper or lower California coast remains to be seen. Both the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers have connections with the wideout.

ESPN.com predicts that Garcon is the Rams top free-agent target

The Washington Redskins waited until Monday, just thee days before the start of the new NFL year when free agents officially can start signing contracts, according to Breaking Burgundy.

“After zero contact from the Washington Redskins all off-season, the organization reached out to Garcon’s camp within the last 24 hours, Breaking Burgundy has learned. Don’t get excited. League-wide perception remains the same.

“As one source put it, ‘Garcon won’t be back to Skins. Period.'”

Garcon said on a podcast with host and former Indianapolis Colts teammate Pat McAfee that the Washington Redskins still haven’t contacted him, just three days before free agents may begin negotiating with any team, the Washington Post reported.

The 10th-year veteran may not be all that concerned with a return.

According to CBS’ DC affiliate website, a Washington-area radio station reported the 30-year-old who will turn 31 before the start of the 2017 season, requested a midseason trade last year.

“I have a little bit of breaking news here,” 106.7’s Chad Dukes said. “I don’t know if we need the sounder. I just heard from somebody that I believe and trust… that Pierre Garcon, during the course of the regular season, requested a trade as he was playing for the Washington Redskins.”

Garcon told the Washington Post of the weekend that he thought any team needing a veteran wide receiver would be a good fit for him but noted rumors about the 49ers and Rams because of new head coaches Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay—both former Redskins offensive coordinators.

“Obviously, everyone’s connecting me to the L.A. Rams because Sean McVay, our ex-offensive coordinator is there,” Garcon said. “And Kyle Shanahan, the ex-offensive coordinator for the Falcons, is in San Francisco, so they’re saying that. Actually, any team that needs a veteran receiver, just to plug in and make that Super Bowl run, to tell you the truth.”

Neither the Rams nor 49ers are close to the Super Bowl, but he would upgrade both teams’ wide receiver depth.
