Los Angeles Rams defensive end Ethan Westbrooks will not faces charges of suspicion of domestic violence, a spokesman said.
The Los Angeles Times, which originally broke the story, reported that the 26-year-old Westbrooks was arrested March 5 and released the next day. A Sacramento County district attorney’s offense decided against moving forward with charges.
Police fielded a call regarding a child custody dispute, ESPN.com reported, and discovered that the mother of one of Westrbrooks’ three children had upper-body injuries.
“An initial investigation determined she had suffered non-life-threatening injuries during a domestic violence incident that involved Westbrooks, according to a news release issued by the Sacramento Police Department shortly after the arrest, according to ESPN.com.
Police found Westbrooks at another residence and arrested him, booking him into the Sacramento County Main Jail.
ESPN.com added that Westbrooks, who played college football at West Texas A&M, has been involved in a continual custody battle. He has three children with three different women.
It’s unclear which child was at the center of the most recent dispute.
Westbrooks is a restricted free agent. He joined the Rams from West Texas A&M in 2014 and gained minor notoriety as the defensive linemen the Rams kept on their roster over 2014 seventh-round draft selection Michael Sam.
Earlier in 2014, Sam became the first openly gay player to enter the NFL Draft. The Rams released Sam before the season. He signed with the Dallas Cowboys but also was released later that season.
Westbrooks has played in 35 career games with two starts. He has 48 career tackles.
The Rams have right of first refusal which pays Westbrooks about $1.8 million for the 2017 season and allows the team to match any offer sheet from another club.
