Los Angeles Rams May Not Fit DeSean Jackson’s Wishes

DeSean Jackson doesn’t sound like he interested in a rebuild.

The Washington Redskins free agent wide receiver has been linked to the Los Angeles Rams, based on his relationship with new head coach Sean McVay. McVay was his offensive coordinator last season in the nation’s capital.

But Jackson told ESPN’s Adam Schefter (h/t RamsWire) that, besides the money, he “would love to play with a great quarterback.”

The 30-year-old Jackson said he had that in Washington but understands the business of free agency and that he might not return.

“I think Kirk Cousins is a great quarterback,” Jackson said. “He’s done some great things the past couple years as far as statistics. If it’s another team I have to go to, we know the business of the NFL. I would love to play with a great quarterback and take that to the next level.”

That doesn’t necessarily describe Rams quarterback Jared Goff, at least not yet. During his rookie season, Goff completed 54.6 percent of his passes with five touchdowns and seven interceptions. He had a passer rating of 63.6 and went 0-7 in his seven starts.

RamsWire suggested that McVay and the L.A. staff might have some convincing to do to gauge Jackson’s interest.

If that’s the case, McVay and the Rams might want to pass on Jackson. If they sell him on Goff and then Goff struggles, Jackson’s frustration could be a distraction to a young offense trying to develop a quarterback.

Jackson still has elite speed and could stretch the defense. But he’s 30 years old, and he alone isn’t enough to put the Rams into playoff contention.

And Jackson has talked up another 2016 rookie, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, saying he’s open to returning to Philly.

If he’s open to helping improve the offense, then Los Angeles should explore signing him. But if he needs convincing on Goff, the Rams shouldn’t waste their time.
