The Los Angeles Rams have shored their quarterback position.
Somewhat, anyway.
The Rams official site announced Thursday that the team has agreed to terms with free-agent quarterback Aaron Murray (h/t Los Angeles Times). The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Murray was a fifth-round selection of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014. He spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons with the Chiefs, who released him during the 2016 preseason.
Murray then found a spot on the Arizona Cardinals practice roster for a short while. He spent most of last year on the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad. Eagles coach Doug Pederson was the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator when Murray was in Kansas City.
The 6-foot-1, 207-pound Murray played with Rams teammates Todd Gurley and Alec Ogletree at the University of Georgia. Playing from 2010-13, Murray threw for 13,166 yards with 121 touchdowns and 41 interceptions. He had a 62.3 career completion percentage.
Murray also ran for 396 yards and scored 16 TDs. His best rushing year came as a senior when he had 186 rushing touchdowns and seven TDs.
Murray is pegged as Los Angeles’ third-string quarterback, behind second-year starter Jared Goff and third-year player Sean Mannion. Case Keenum, who started the 2016 as the Rams starter, is a free agent and not expected to return to Los Angeles.
The 26-year-old Murray has yet to play in an NFL game, but he could vie for playing time if he can spark a Rams offense that ranked last in the NFL last season in yards per game 262.7) and points (14.0). Goff went 0-7 as a starter but will get a lot of chance to keep the starting job because of the Rams’ move up in last year’s draft to make him the No. 1 overall pick.
